Turn the dial-a-down so it's halfway between 1 and 2.


When the conversion is made, set it to the correct number and wave it over your head.

We don't have a guideline for this. Most do as SkyBolt - I expect they do that in the NFL.
I had never thought of Etref's point with the 4th fumble rule. I like that and will propose it for this year.

Actually the most useful info to have on the marker would be the number of the previous down. While this would be most applicable in games with replay, it could come in handy for others as well. Until the ball is snapped for the try, there is always the possibility of having to recreate the the down and distance of the previous play. Leave the down marker and chain clip as is.

Our mechanics say "1", but I have always (or at least for a very very long time) thought it should be "4". Mainly because of the reason stated above (4th down fumble rule), but also because this is the last down of that little mini series. I realize that it is also the ONLY down, but I still think 4th seems more sensible, but mostly because of the fumble rule.

I think the reason we put 1 on there is so we don't confuse people.  Let's say a TD was scored on 3rd down on a pass from the 3 yard line.  You then switch the down box to 4.  What are people going to think?

If you switch it to 1, there isn't any confusion

I agree with bossman. I can't envision a scenario where Team A would put the ball into play first down at the Team B 3 after any penalty. There could be a situation where the score/clock doesn't see the TD signal.

Right, but there's a foul in those instances.  Never would we ever in football go from 2nd or 3rd down to 1st down without a foul or gaining a first down.  So changing it to 1st down on the try would eliminate any confusion

DPI at the B3 would put the ball at the 2, Just saying!
When the ball is snapped on or inside the Team B 17-yard line and outside the Team B two-yard line, and the spot of the foul is on or inside the two-yard line, the penalty from the previous spot shall place the ball at the two-yard line, first down (A.R.7-3-8-XIV).

Umh, no, it won't. The A.R. you quoted has it right, and as the spot of the foul in my example is outside B-2, the ball will be placed at the spot of the foul, not at B-2.

Most of the HL's in our league set it at 4 now. Took a little while for them to accept it though.

Nope!

If you had a brain fart and forgot what the play was, if it always said "4" you would not typically know whether you had just had a 4th down field goal attempt or a try. If it says "1" and they kicked the ball, you have a good chance of remembering it was a try.
