Mouth Gaurds?

1) Do they have to be molded?
2) Can they be predominately white with the smallest punt of red?
3) Can they be embossed with the team name or some other word?
4) Do they have to cover all teeth?
5) Can the strap be cut off so when inserted nothing is seen?

Rule 1-5-1d(5) will answer each of those questions.
"Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good."

I just got done reading that exact rule. That being said, it says nothing about the strap needing to be exposed. I've always understood that it can be completely cut off however I have a coach (neighbor) that is convinced that 2 inches at least needs to remain.

Since I'm the type of official that rarely goes looking for such problems I guess it's fair to say that I was not 100% certain........so I thought I would bring it to the masses for clarity.

Coaches have some strange ideas about the rules.

While I understand his reasoning (so it's easy to see if the mouthpiece is in), he has no support in the rules.

A strap isn't even required.

As suggested above, NFHS 1-5-d-5-a and b clearly states ALL requirements.  Sharing that information, with someone who may never have had the opportunity to see those details, can provide a valuable learning experience.
