Returner blocking after giving a fair catch signal
« on: July 24, 2014, 10:06:08 AM »
Has anyone got a video of this happening?  I've got one *somewhere* but I can't remember where I've put it, and of course now I've run into a situation where it'd be really great to have the damn thing.

What is the call and the succeeding spot here?

It's an illegal block. The signal is the same as an illegal block below the waist. If it happens on a free kick, it's enforced from the spot of the foul. If it's in a scrimmage kick, it's a PSK foul.

On this play the kick ends in the end zone, touchback.  20 yard line is the result, with PSK in effect the foul is behind the end of the kick spot (20 yard line) penalty enforced at the 6 yard line spot of the foul.  Half the distance 1st and 10 from B's 3yard line for Team B/Receiving team.

So we've got a PSK foul with 3 and 1 enforcement (the "and 1" in this case) with the basic spot being the 20 yard line due to the kick ending in the EZ?

Did you guys pick this up in your game?  I didn't see a flag.

Sadly no we did not. I am the crew chief and we had a discussion the following day when i reviewed the game tape.

As a former B (now R) i make it a mandatory pre game meeting by my B and at least one other deep wing to talk to the Punt Returners.

1. What is and is not a fair catch?
2. If its a sunny day what he can do to shade his eyes
3. If he give the get away sign we are killing it.
4, If he signals fair catch then blocks its a flag.

We have now also tried to find a special teams coach as well for that meeting so we are all on the same page.

Make a mistake and learn from it, that is how we get better.

Great learning play!  This is one that the wing guys shouldn't be afraid to throw.  The deep guys are focused on the ball since it is threatening the goal line, so they're probably not going to get this one.

But, are the wings necessarily going to know who's given a signal?

Possibly... depends on what's going on with the second wave of players.
