Referee Mag rule quiz 2015
« on: May 27, 2015, 05:56:22 AM »
I'm sure everyone has seen it by now, but just in case you didn't: Referee Magazine has issued their 2015 rules quiz: http://www.referee.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Football_Quiz_2015.pdf

Question 5 is a little strange as the receiver seems to be in 2 places on the field :)

I believe most of will agree many of their quiz questions can be strange.
"Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good."

A1 is obviousl a world-class long jumper.... LOL

The other "interesting" thing about this question is the difference between the wording of the question and the "PlayPic".  Without looking at the picture the question only reads that the receiver is CONTACTED by the defender before landing OOB (no catch).  However, the picture could  suggest that the receiver was actually carried out - which, in the eyes of the beholder, could suggest a catch.

Amateurish editing!!! pi1eOn

Hi,

Just found this forum and saw this quiz, so forgive me for dusting off this topic. I haven't been officiating that long and on that high a level (Belgium, 3rd season, mostly HL and BJ, only NCAA rules).

Interesting quiz, through which I learned new things!

But I'm having trouble with Question 9.
I was leaning towards answer a ("No problem.") because R2 had to take a few steps in order to catch the ball, and thus was not "so located that he could have caught the kick". Although the previous sentence states he was, which is confusing.
If we go by the assumption that he was (which seems illogical because he had to take a few steps), I could understand answer c ("Kick-catching interference whether or not R2 gave a valid fair catch signal.")

But the right answer turns out to be b ("Kick-catching interference only if R2 gave a valid fair catch signal.")? What does kick-catching interference have to do with fair catching? And they direct to Rule 6-4, which is not about fair catching...

Edit: Or maybe I'm focussing on the wrong issue and it's all about the last sentence where "R2 is downed" (tackled), instead of the ball being dead as a result of the fair catch...?

But I'm having trouble with Question 9.

This isn't unusual. I quit my Referee subscription after I realized that they usually had at least one error in their quiz. Rom Gilbert's weekly season quiz is much better.

In question 9, A3 (I also hate their habit of using the NFHS designations in kick plays) must be in the one yard restricted area in front of B2, so this is kick catch interference with or without a fair catch signal in NCAA. I have no clue as to how they get to this being a foul only if a fair catch signal has been given by B2. There is even an A.R. for this, A.R. 6-4-1-IX :(

Why must he be? A3 (if you will) could also be to the right of B2. Kick (because of the wind) sails to B2's right side and he has to go around A3. In that case there is no kick-catch interference, correct?

Aha! Think I need to read through the A.R.'s again...
