Who recovers the fumble
« on: April 24, 2015, 11:46:37 AM »
I've had this question in the back of my mind for some time.

A45 fumbles the ball forward and I see B43 fall on the ball and pull it in just as all and sundry pile on.

In the pile A13 manages to wrench the ball away from B43 and comes up with the ball, as we unpile the players.

I ruled turnover and I'm confident of my ruling but I would like conformation anyway.

For every coach that thinks we got it wrong there's another that thinks we got it right.

If you saw the B player in POSSESSION then good call. If the B player landed on the ball and was pulling it to him then ??????

My suggestion is if you are certain that you know who possessed it, don't worry about the pile.  Kill the clock and signal.  I then start verbalizing to the pile that the ball belongs to X.  "Red Ball, Red Ball....it's over, Red Ball"  something like that.

Based on your description, you made the right call.

Now, MECHANICALLY is where you can make or break this play.  If you signaled emphatically immediately that B recovered, then all is well.  If you waited until everything unpiled, then told the R, then it doesn't look very good.
