MNF - Inadvertent Whistle

around 13 mins in 3rd qtr.  IW by LJ in the Pats Bills game.
Cant remember the last time I heard an IW at the NFL level.

Ruling on the field was that the whistle was blown after the receiver caught the ball...clearly trying to minimize the impact on the offense, but reply was pretty clear that the IW was blown with the ball in the air.

They also dinged Rex Ryan 15 yards for sideline interference on same play.

Can't say for sure, the defense stopped when the whistle was blown. That's why the inadvertent whistle provisions are what they are.

Us? 

You can clearly see the defender who is right next to the receiver stop at the whistle.

Blandino was just on NFL Network and he explained the official lost track of the ball and thought the play was over. I'm guessing the fact he had Rex Ryan screaming in his face may have distracted him a little. At least he got Rex with a flag as well. Based on Rex's post game press conference, it sounds like he thought the whistle blew before the pass was thrown because he said the guy pursuing Brady let up. The whistle was blown when the ball was in the air so it should have been a replay of the down. Is there an NFL rule that does allow them to consider the pass complete? Is that reviewable?

Great play for learning this week for sure!

Being an ole' duffer, I had gone to bed at halftime and didn't see the live version of the IW. From what I could gather this morning : (1) Pats may not have gotten the ball as a completed pass, as the 15 yd ^flag on Ryan took the ball in the area of where the pass was caught. (2) Love the Pats, but disagree that it took a TD away as Bills' D-back appeared to let up with the IW. (3) I'm unsure of the IW/NFL rule, but I believe that the replay reversal of an incomplete pass turning into a fumble is treated as an IW with the down counting and ball at spot of fumble.

No 7-2 (m) when an official sounds his whistle erroneously while the ball is still in play, the ball becomes dead immediately
(1) If the ball is in player possession, the team in possession may elect to put the ball in play where it has been declared dead or to replay the down.

One more question related to MNF.

On the very last play the Bills player caught a catch untouched and went to the ground in bounds, he subsequently rolled out of bounds with 2 seconds on the clock.  The HL wound the clock and time expired.

Now that would be correct in NCAA, however surely in the NFL that's a live ball which became dead when the player went OOB?  Shouldn't there have been one more play and shouldn't that have been reviewed upstairs?

I believe the report from the post game pool said that the ruling on the field was that the runner gave himself up. Since he did so inbounds, the clock wound. Now whether or not that's a proper judgement...

Rex was clearly out in front of the head linesman, and I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that his interference "caused" the IW.

In addition to the 2 situations mentioned, the HL also made error on moving chains when LTG not obtained on the final Bills drive (I cannot find video but saw it live; if I saw correctly). I believe was first play of final series; Bills gained ~9 yards on 1st down; HL, clearly on short side of LTG stake, starts waiving chains down (not sure if he got signal from LJ or did on own); the spot was challenged and overturned but irrelevent to the error because spot held by HL was short.
Not a stellar night for the guys.
