NCAA Rule Changes - UIL Prognostication
« on: March 24, 2016, 02:36:13 PM »
Based on the new NCAA rule changes, does anyone have thoughts/ideas what UIL might do?
Obviously, most of the stuff for TV games will be UIL exceptions, but what is their typical stance/approach when they decide on what to make an exception or not?  Do they usually keep the game management/player safety/sportsmanship-type changes while providing exceptions to things specific to TV games?

A couple that were interesting to me:
  • sliding ball carrier: defenseless player
  • game clock last two minutes of half
  • tripping the ball carrier
  • BBW
  • unsportsmanlike changes for coaches?

I know I had at least two games last year where the game clock clarification would have been beneficial.
The unsportsmanlike for coaches seems to run counter to some of the culture of Texas football, but I personally think RR's comment was spot on in the rationale for the change.
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

I doubt the UIL comes up with exceptions for any of these:

sliding ball carrier: defenseless player
game clock last two minutes of half
tripping the ball carrier
BBW
unsportsmanlike changes for coaches?

That said, if there is a situation where a coach is by himself on the sideline, they are going to tell us to not force the coach to leave.  That would be a very rare circumstance I would think.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't many actual playing rule exceptions other than those that deal with timing (quarter, clock start/stop, etc.) and punishment (ejection carry over, etc.). Maybe a uniform thing and, of course, replay. I can't see UIL starting to except actual live ball-type playing rules.
