Do We Need a Rule or Wording Change?
« on: May 06, 2019, 02:26:01 PM »
7-2-1 currently says "After the ball has been marked ready for play, each player of A who participated in the previous down and each substitute for A must have been, momentarily, between the 9 yard marks, before the snap."

With the 40 second clock, we will no longer "mark the ball ready for play".  This might just be semantics, but a change to the wording here would be helpful.  Or will we say that the new "dead ball signal" is now the equivalent of the RFP?

  • Without officials... it is only recess.

The rule book is out and 7-2-1 now states: After the ready for play, each player of A who participated in the previous down and each substitute for A must have been, momentarily, between the 9-yard marks, before the snap. There you have it!

The ball is ready for play when an official (usually the umpire) places the ball and steps away from it.

Keep in mind the 9-yard rule is to prevent a team from sneaking someone in late outside the numbers. If he's covered by the defense don't be too technical. You'll know this play when you see it. Don't get too hung up on the timing aspect of it. The reference to RFP is to make sure a team doesn't run someone inside the numbers early in the play clock and then send them out to hide them while players are unpiling on the previous play.

I don't believe we've had any more than 1 or 2 of this foul in all the years it's been a rule. If you are flagging this often you are probably being way too technical.
