Field Markings

Does a NFHS field have to have a mark on the 40 yard line?  I do not see that covered in the wording of the rule, however in the field diagram that is in the book, there is an "X" on each 40 yard line.

My knee jerk response would be no. The X serves no purpose in the 49, because K is free to kick from any spot within the hashes.

It would seem marking each 40 yard line is simply to simplify identifying it as the designated Free Kick line.

Remembering back to my daze of youth, down-markers and numbers on the field had yet to be invented. Often we would arrive to a field with only 10 painted yard lines and both 40's "Xed". It made life easier then. Life has became much easier, with the markings, since then. Probably no reason to remove the "Xs" has ever came up.
