Being paid "late"
« on: October 15, 2019, 08:59:08 PM »
With the rise of online payment systems (ArbiterPay, etc.), it's not uncommon in my region to be paid online a day or two (or four) after the game where we would have received a paper check pregame. I've had Thursday JV games where the checks weren't sent out online until the following Monday.

Is this normal elsewhere? Is it accepted? Are there complaints? I'm not complaining about the electronic payment method itself, just the possibility that we could work a game and then not be paid.

Yes. Yes. Yes.  We still have a couple of schools who write checks but majority is ArbiterPay. Most of the time we get paid on Monday  unless the payer forgets. I had to call the school 2 weeks ago to remind the lady. This week we got paid on Saturday morning, I suspect because this week is fall break. Last year we had to wait nearly two weeks because the payer waited until she got back from a Fall break. Some schools used to pay on 15 th and 30th. That was a nightmare until they stopped it because of so many complaints.

We've been told to expect it to happen more and more, although in reality, I can think of only one school that pays us via Arbiter.  We have several schools that still mail us a paper check.  I receive it anywhere from the Tuesday or Thursday following.  None later than that and I can live with it.

For HS games when we get paper checks (still about 2/3 of the time) they are in the locker room for us when we arrive. Many of our schools are now using a tool called Eventlink for scheduling. They have a pay function as well. In the games we've been paid through it, the AD did it shortly after we arrived.

For our college games we rarely get checks on site. Almost always they are mailed to us and arrive 1-2 weeks after the game. I don't pay much attention because I generally try to hold my checks until the holidays and use it for Christmas money. I now have 2 kids in college though so I'm often depositing them during the season to cover a tuition bill.

All games are paid through arbiterpay in Arizona. Sometime between Saturday and the following Thursday the money arrives.  The various schools fund their account, but the AIA is the one who releases the fund and will handle the school if their account is underfunded to pay the officials (which rarely happens).

Personally, I prefer this over the check writing. Back in Ohio, it was rare to get a check the day of the game and often I didn't get the check in the mail until a couple of weeks later. In fact with Cincinnati Public schools it wasn't unusual to get paid a month later.

I've had one game paid this year through ArbiterPay, rest are paper checks.  I keep track of my game sin a spreadsheet and still have game payments outstanding from 9/6, and 10/4 and 10/10.  Checks will show up eventually.

Our chapter services 19 schools. All pay by check but only 3 (all private schools) pay on the spot. Most are on a 2 week pay cycle, so your check will arrive anywhere between 1+ and 2+ weeks. I'm the red cap for a D-I and play or game clock operator for 2 D-III NCAA schools. They pay via ZebraPay  and $$$ arrives in my checking account the following Friday. I put the paper checks in a big jar and ,after Thanksgiving, use them for Christmas gifts.

You guys are complaining about 1-2 weeks. We get paid three times a season. Once halfway. Once after the last week and once after playoffs. All pay is done by Arbiter pay. The schools pay the section. The Section pays the assigner. The assigner pays the officials. Everyone takes a cut along the way.

I would love to have some of the "problems" some of you are having. In MA, a great majority of the schools still pay with checks. The public schools send a check from the town they are in and if you're lucky it will be only 3+ week wait at the earliest. I've had one private school pay with ArbiterPay the following Wednesday after a game and that was the earliest I have ever been paid for a HS game. I still have 2 scrimmages from August that I haven't been paid for. For the most part, the college games pay fairly quickly.

Here, schools pay the association upfront for all scheduled games.  The assigned WH is given a check for his game, and officials are given cash (“which is just as good as money”) after the game.

Nobody takes a “cut”.  Schools are charged an administrative fee for each contract, which is split between the treasurer and the assignor.

round these parts per how the County operates, schools pay via one "purchase order" and it's paid after the work is completed - i.e. after all home games are completed.
With that, my assn just pays us once a year 2-3 weeks after the last regular season games.
It's a nice pre-Christmas check.

Well things are likely going to get worse as California recently passed a law that will likely make it difficult for use to operate as independent contractors. Not sure how they are going to handle it. Even Uber and Lyft drivers will no longer be allowed as independent contractors.
