Team Box
« on: September 25, 2020, 08:24:34 PM »
Was watching a HS game from Texas on NFHS Network,

Noticed that the players team box was from 25-25 and being observed by the players.  But the coaches seem to be able to drift down to the 15 or so.  Are the coaches allowed to do that?  Is that something new for this season?

Players and Coaches boxes have been extended to the 10 to allow for more team distancing.

Just to clarify, for UIL/TAPPS games in Texas,  the Team box (correct Term: Team area) is only extended to the 10-to-the-10 if agreed upon by schools and officials are notified before the game. It's not an automatic done deal.

That is not how it’s been presented. I haven’t been notified yet but at the same time I don’t think this is one we want to be strict on.

Super interesting, I agree that is not how it has been communicated, but appears to be the case.

That said, so far, even when they make it down to the 10, the majority of coaches I’ve seen, will still refuse to go down that far. I reminded one, that he was allowed to, at a JH game and he stated he was just old school.

I also agree this is not something to be nitpicky on (notification prior to the game.) it’s not that big a deal, doesn’t have a direct influence or impact in the game, and is not something I want to have to try to explain when the coach calls the chapter and complains. There are many hills worth dying on, this is not one of them.

Well, if somehow, despite all the very numerous and clear communications from TASO on this item, for any TASO member that has missed the direction on this, let me fill you in.

Per UIL policy for 2020, if BOTH teams agree and notify the Referee prior to the game, the team areas may be extended to the 10 yard lines. Once the game starts, the team areas are set, and may not be changed. Responsibility for management and control of those persons in the team area is solely with the teams/game management. Game officials have no responsibility for who are in the team areas, or where people are within the team areas.
The expanded team areas do NOT have to be marked.

The most important thing is that BOTH teams have to agree. If one team does not want to use the expanded team areas, then neither team may use the expanded team areas. Had that happen last night. Home team did not want use expanded team areas. Visiting team wanted to, and were very annoyed with home team when they were notified the team areas would be 25-25.

Got it now?

To me this is the same as knee pads. Some people are militant about enforcing it, others let them get away with it.

Enforce what? It is their choice. If they don’t agree to 10-10, then it is 25-25. We keep ‘em inside the team areas, whatever they mutually agree the team areas are to be. If they don’t mutually agree to 10-10, then, by default, it is 25-25.
But, the team areas are the same for both teams, whatever they decide.

Rules also say they have to have a mouth piece ANOTHER piece of safety equipment. Do you enforce that rule. You should be not only for consistency but to keep from being hauled into court when little Johnny looses his teeth!

I am sure you are a better official than that.

I will definitely bring this up at chapter meeting this week.  When it was communicated to it, it was conveyed as being very minor and was a default change, not requiring agreement or anything like that.
