Just wondering how many white hats on crews still use the arm straight out with thumb up mechanic to signify a count of 11 offensive players on the field?  I count on every play and use the signal that 11 players are present (to include 5 linemen numbered 50-79) but wondering how necessary it is when a team can run a formation with just 5 lineman on the line and 4 or less in the backfield.

The count is to assure no more than 11 players on field and should be done each down.

HS mechanic is CLOSED FIST (Fonzi style may be NCAA/NFL; dunno). IMO fist looks better anyway.

After 45 years of reffing football I think I understand the concept of the arm out signal to signify 11 on the field.  This was also used as an aid to the wings so that when the WH signaled such, they only had to count the four in the backfield to know that there were 7 on the line.  With recent rule changes, you would technically only need 5 on the line to be legal.  So what signal are WH's giving if 10 or less are on the field?

We have always used the closed fist fully extended for 11 and the closed fist touching the center of the chest to indicate 10 or less.

10 or less = hands to the chest

Where I am, 10 is signaled with both hands, palms out showing "10". Closed fist on chest is used by the wings to signal legal formation (correct number of backs).
