I have a chop, the guard was engaged with the defender ( regardless if it was incidental) when the LT went low

First off, great video quality in that link - thanks.  I do not have a Chop Block as the guard was not engaging the defender when the tackle went low against the defender. The defender here actually initiates the contact with the guard who is soft-pulling away from the defender. I think the low-block by the OT is during the initial line charge and a legal BBW. Thoughts?

I heard this evening from one of my FBS sources that Shaw has indicated this is a) not a chop blcok (no actual engagement by the guard), but it b) is an illegal block below the waist. The rationale is that the guard had to travel too far for this to be considered “initial charge.”
So, essentially, if a player has to chase an opponent to make a (low) side block, then the block is illegal.

Shaw needs to include this in a video of low block examples - and soon.

I would have ruled this 1)not a chop block, for reasons outlined above, and 2) a legal BBW, as I felt it was still his initial charge.  Knowing now that this is a foul, is making me re-evaluate what I had considered initial charge.  I thought we didn't want to be too technical, but I definitely need to tighten up my definition of initial charge.

We are all in that same boat. Shaw really needs to issue a comprehensive video that covers virtually every possibility, with rulings. This crap of “You’ll know it when you see it,” and “use common sense,” is just that - crap. Video examples are available. One of our local guys was able to pull together an hours’ worth of examples from UIL games that helped all of us get a complete understanding of the 2022 BBW rules. But that was before this Boise St.-Ok. St. example. So, we add that to our set of examples, and, hopefully know that a ‘chase’ means that the initial charge has been expended, and only a 10-2 block in the TB (while the ball is in the TB) would be legal by this guy.

OK 1st, I am not calling anymore (boy I wish I was). 2nd, watch the clock. 1 second runs off the clock when the tackle goes low.   This has to be initial charge.   How can any Umpire look at his area of responsibility in one second (the blink of an eye) and determine if everyone in his area blocked cleanly.   I like the new rule but there has to be some common sense by Shaw and whomever else is making the decisions.  You call what you see, if after 1 second you see the tackle blocking low it has to be initial charge.  How far can he chase in 1 second?
