2024 Week 0 SB-Quiz
« on: August 23, 2024, 11:20:38 AM »
Read 'em, and make me weep, if needed.
----------------------------------------------

1.   2/10 @ B-40. Late in the game, A22 runs for 8 yards and is tackled short of the line to gain. The game clock reads 1:58 when A22 is downed. B54’s helmet came off (not a direct result of a foul) during the play. Play clock?
RULING:
Straight out of Week 0 Bulletin: B, 3/2, B-32, 1:58 (4), snap (25). The game clock was stopped for the 2-minute notification, which will govern game clock and play clock status. Thus, the play clock will be set to 25-seconds, and will start on the referee’s signal (following the time-out). The game clock will start on the snap. B54 may not participate in the next down, unless Team B is granted a charged team time out.

2.   2/10 @ B-40. Early in the 2nd quarter, A22 runs for 8 yards and is tackled short of the line to gain, and the Team A head coach calls timeout at the end of the play. B54’s helmet came off (not a direct result of a foul) during the play. Play clock?
RULING:
A, 3/2, B-32, (time remaining unknown), snap (25). B54 may not participate in the next down, unless his team is granted a charged team time out. The charged time out governs the game clock and the play clock, thus, the play clock is set to 25-seconds and will start on the referee’s signal, and the game clock will start on the snap.

3.   4/5 @ B-10. During the first possession series of the 1st extra period, Team A’s field goal attempt is blocked and does not cross the neutral zone. A80 recovers the ball at the B-15 and runs to the B-4 where he is downed.
RULING:
A, 1/G, B-4, no game clock (25, starts on the referee’s signal). Team A's possession series is NOT broken. By rule, following a scrimmage kick down, the play clock is set to 25-seconds and starts on the referee’s signal.

4.   4/5 @ B-10. During the first possession series of the 1st extra period, Team A’s field goal attempt is blocked and does not cross the neutral zone. B55 recovers the ball at the B-15 and runs to the B-40 where he fumbles. A80 recovers the ball at the B-40 and runs to the B-4 where he is downed.
RULING:
B, 1/10, +25, no game clock (25). When B55 recovers the ball, Team A’s possession series is broken, and, in the absence of a penalty that would return the ball to Team A and continue their possession series, Team B will begin their possession series in the extra period.

5.   2/10 @ B-25. During the first possession series of the 1st extra period, B21 intercepts A12’s pass at the B-4, reverses field on the return and is downed two yards deep in his own end zone (no momentum).
RULING:
B, 1/10, +25, no game clock (25). The pure result of the down is a safety, 2-points for Team A. Team B will begin their possession series in the extra period. (Note that, in the third extra period (and beyond), rather than a possession series, each team gets a modified “try” down, in which touchdowns will score 2 points, field goals have no scoring value, and a safety will score 1 point).

6.   3/10 @ B-40. Early in the 4th quarter, B33 intercepts A12’s pass at the B-10 and returns for a touchdown. As the Line Judge is coming down the sideline covering the play, they drop the flag during the return after running into the Team B head coach. The head coach was out on the field of play at the B- 40.
RULING:
B, try, A-18, no game clock (25), OR B, try, A-3, no game clock (25), with B, kickoff, B-20 (25). B-HC committed a game administration interference foul (with physical contact). This is treated as a dead-ball foul, and Team A may have the penalty enforced on the try or at the succeeding kickoff. This is a ‘team,’ UNS, so no person has a foul added to their UNS ‘counter.’

7.   4/12 @ A-35. Team A lines up in scrimmage kick formation and intends to punt. Immediately after the snap, B55 grabs RT A77 and pulls him to the side and B21 shoots the gap in an attempt to block the punt. The punter gets the punt away and the ball is downed at the B-35.
RULING:
A, 1/10, A-45, snap (25). B55 commits a holding foul BEFORE the kick. By rule, this is enforced with the Previous Spot as the Basic Spot, so the penalty will be 10-yards from the previous spot, with a first down for Team A.

8.   Free Kick @ A-35. A98’s kick is muffed in flight by B21 in his end zone. While the ball is loose in the end zone, B21 bats the ball out of the back of the end zone.
RULING:
B, Free Kick, B-20, free kick timing (25).  The pure result of the down is a touchback, because the impetus on the ball remains with Team A’s kick. However, B21’s batting of the ball in the end zone is a foul, with post-scrimmage kick enforcement. The Basic Spot is the post-scrimmage kick spot, which, when the kick ends in the end zone, is the B-20. By the 3 and 1 principle, the penalty will leave the ball in B’s end zone, which results in a safety – 2 points for Team A, and a free kick to follow.   I screwed that one up. See comments below.

8. Is a free kick not a scrimmage kick; PSK is not an option.

Oh boy. Talk about misreading the question...  What a moron (I am).

A, free kick, A-45, free kick timing (25).
Illegal batting by B21. The previous spot is the only enforcement spot available. The 10-yard penalty for the illegal bat will take the ball to the A-45. Of course, Team A 'could' decline the penalty, and let Team B have the ball at the B-25, 1/10. Not likely. Of interest, note that the game clock would not have been started during this down.
