SB-Quiz 12
« on: November 14, 2024, 01:58:34 PM »
Sitting in a Dickey’s restaurant, with a little time to kill. Check me.

1. 4/5 @ A-35. A98’s punt travels seven yards beyond the neutral zone where B33 touches the ball. The
ball then rebounds behind the neutral zone, where A21 recovers it at the A-30 and is downed.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/10, A-30, snap, (25).

2. 3/10 @ B-15. A12 throws a legal forward pass to airborne A88 who gains firm control of the ball one
yard within the opponent’s end zone. As A88 gains firm control of the ball he is contacted by B21 and
A88 first comes to the ground on his feet at the one-yard line and maintains firm control of the ball. A88
falls to the ground at the ˝ yard line.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, try, B-3, no clock (25).
Progress to where A88 was contacted by B21.

3. 3/10 @ B-35. Late in the 4th quarter Team A trails by 2 points and is out of timeouts. A44 rushes for
12 yards, and the clock is stopped with 0:02 remaining on the clock. QB A12 gets his team lined up in a
legal formation, and just after the referee appropriately blows his whistle and signals, which starts the
game clock, the quarterback takes the snap and spikes the ball. The ball hits the ground and the clock
shows 0:01, and replay can confirm that the ball hit the ground with 0:01 on the clock.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
Game over. By rule, there must be at least 3-seconds on the game clock to allow a legal spike of the ball.

4. 1/10 @ B-25. The game is tied 20-20, and on the first possession series of the first extra period, Team
A scores a touchdown. On the try, B21 intercepts A12’s pass and returns it across Team A’s goal line.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, 1/10, A25, no clock (25). Team A leads by 4 points, and B gets a possession series.

5. 3/5 @ B-35. Team B has 12 players in the formation, and B44 recognizes that he is the 12th player and
is attempting to leave the field. When the ball is snapped, B44 is on the field but his next stride takes him
off the field. Team A snaps the ball and the run by A21 gains 3 yards.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/10, B-30, ready (25).
Illegal sub. Penalty is accepted. 5-Yards, previous spot, yields a first down.

6. 3/Goal @ B-5. Ball carrier A22 heads for the right pylon at the goal line. At the B-2 he dives and the
ball, in A22’s right hand, crosses the sideline at the B-1 and the ball passes outside the pylon. A22 then
touches the pylon with his left hand while still airborne with the ball beyond the goal line extended.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│_____________
A, try, B-3, no clock (25).
When A22 touched the pylon, the goal line plane is extended beyond the sideline, and the ball has broken that plane. TD.

7. 3/Goal @ B-5. Ball carrier A22 heads for the right pylon at the goal line. At the B-2 he dives and the
ball, in A22’s right hand, crosses the sideline at the B-1 and passes outside the pylon. A22 first touches
the ground out of bounds three yards beyond the goal line.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 4/G, B-1, insufficient info for clock status (40 and running).

8. Free Kick @ A-35. The kickoff is high and deep, and deep receiver B21 gives the “T signal” as the kick
is in flight. B21 catches the kick right at the goal line and returns the kick back to the B-35.
B, 1/10, B-35, snap (25).
Not a signal of any kind that causes the ball to become dead. Legal catch and advance.

I am very curious to see S-B's ruling on Number 3. The language of 3-2-5 would seem to have us rule that the game is over. "With two seconds or one second on the game clock there is enough time for only one play." That seems pretty clear. The business about replay getting involved and confirming 1-second remains seems to be in direct conflict with the rule language. If the RO tells the R that 1-second remains, can the R overrule the RO and rely on 3-2-5 to declare the game over, by rule?

We'll see what they say.

First, The RO should not stop the game for a review in this situation.
Second, by rule the game will end because the legal spike cannot occur with less than :03 on the clock.  (3-2-5).

The "game over" ruling is correct, per the S/B answers. They even go so far as to say that the GCO should not allow the game clock to stop with 0:01 remaining.
All well and good. But, somewhere, sometime, Team A will scream that there was still one second on the clock when the ball hit the ground, and they'll even insist on a replay review. I suppose the R will just tell them, "Sorry. By rule, you can only have one down with only 2-seconds on the clock when the ball is made ready for play." But video will show the ball hitting the ground with 1 second, and broadcasters and social media will go bananas.
Let's just hope this doesn't happen.

The good news is that we know the rule (for what that's worth).

OH, looky there.
No. 8. S/B says "A", 1/10. Nah. "B", 1/10. We all make typos, eh? They might argue that Team B has now become Team A. C'mon, now. While that is technically true, that is not proper quiz answer convention.

Not something we would likely screw up on the field, but, we need to be sharper than that. ;)
