Question - late in the day
« on: February 11, 2026, 06:17:35 PM »
4/15, 50, 8:00 (3), A=10, B=7.
Team A’s legal punt lands at the B-5, bounces high, and is in flight over, or beyond, the plane of B’s goal line, when A99 bats the ball (or it deflects off of A99), and the ball (having never touched the ground on or beyond B’s goal line) lands in the field of play where it is recovered by A88 at the B-4. Team A had 5 players in their backfield at the snap.

B will decline the penalty and take it at the spot of illegal touching - It will be B 1/10 @ B20.

Here's are three more on the same subject:

1) A 4/9 @ B49. The punt bounces at the B3 and is over the end zone at position 5, when A20 bats the ball back into the field of play where A40 ends the play by picking it up at the B4 yard line. Coach B requests that the ball be placed at position 1 for their first snap.

2) A 4/7 @ B44.  The punt is high and bounces in the side zone opposite the press box at the B4. The ball is over the end zone, when A21 bats it back into the field of play. Returner B30 picks the ball up at the B3 yard line and is immediately tackled there by A40 who pulls him down to the ground by his facemask.

3) A 4/8 @ B39. The punt bounces at the B3 and is over the end zone at position 1 when A20 bats the ball back into the field of play. B30 picks the ball up at the B3 yard line and runs out to the B35 where he is hit and fumbles. Grounded A41 recovers at the B36. There were no fouls during the play.

Does 6-3-13 apply? If so, why? If not, why not?

I have no direct rule support, but I would allow B to choose the lateral position, if done before the RFP sigal.

The FMM would be enforced at the end of the related run which is the B-3, taking the ball to the B-18. Team B would decline the penalty and invoke their illegal touching privilege, and get the ball 1/10, B-20, with lateral position of their choice.

Team B will invoke their illegal touching privilege and take the ball at the B-20, 1/10, at the lateral location of their choice. (The lesson for Team A is to not touch the ball illegally.)

It does not apply, because A touching the ball in the end zone is a violation for illegal touching, it is NOT a touchback. For them to be awarded the ball at the spot of illegal touching (which would be the 20, in this case) they must decline the foul. If this were a true touchback, the succeeding spot would be the 20; A could then tack on the foul or back them up and rekick.

Technically I suppose, since it's illegal touching they wouldn't get the choice. However, since the bat in 6-3-11 situations essentially prevents what would be a touchback and B did something illegal to prevent that from happening, I'd agree that it would be all right to let them choose. I've just never had this one asked before so thought I'd bring it up.
