Chop blocks or not - What would you have?
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:33:34 PM »
2nd and long at midfield - an "obvious" passing down.  Team A is in shotgun formation with 1 up-back and offensive line in wide splits.  B has a three man line head up on both A tackles and A's center.  Just before the snap, all three B linemen shift into the gaps.  At the snap:

a)  A-52 (the snapper) fires out with a low cut block to his left and whiffs, while nose tackle B-96 heads past him just as A-62 (guard) throws a high block that knocks B-96 partially sideways as he then "trips" over A-52 who is on the ground after whiffing on his initial block attempt, and B-96 then goes down hard backwards across A-52.

b)  A-52 (the snapper) fires out with a high block to his left and almost completely misses nose tackle B-96, then "slides" down B-96 to his knees just as A-62 (guard) throws a high block that knocks B partially sideways as he then "trips" over A-52 who is still in his knees after almost missing the initial block attempt, and B-96 then goes down hard backwards across A-52.

c)  A-52 (the snapper) fires out with a high block to his left and almost completely misses nose tackle B-96, then "slides" down the B player to his knees just as A-24 (back) comes up to the LOS and throws a low block that knocks B-96 backwards as he then "trips" over A-52 who is still in his knees after almost missing the initial block attempt, and B-96 then goes down hard backwards across A-52.

d)  A-52 (the snapper) fires out with a high block to his left and almost completely misses nose tackle B-96, then "slides" down the B player to his knees just as A-24 (back) comes up to the LOS and throws a high block that knocks B-96 backwards as he then "trips" over A-52 who is still in his knees after almost missing the initial block attempt, and B-96 then goes down hard backwards across A-52.

Which of these, if any, would you flag as a chop block?

It's easy to get the players, getting 'em to play together, that's the hard part. - Casey Stengel

Ok...I'll bite....

The phrase, 'almost completely misses him' means he hit him (kinda like a near miss in an airplane), so with that, only 'c' by rule meets the definition of a chop block.  'Sliding down' means this is a high block, and eventhough both 'ended up' low on 'c', technically, by rule, it is a high/low.
I'm not penalizing A-52 for lying on the ground; just initial reaction without verifying anything in the rulebook on this part.

Now, that's the rulebook...show it to me on film, and I may tell you another story.
