But it isn't really "free" after 10 yards if the ball is still catchable and a Team B player has a chance to catch it. Team A have to give team B the opportunity to make the catch or they take the risk of being called for KCI.
Sounds to me as if you got this call perfect and enforced it correctly.
If A wish to remove the chance of KCI, then when they do an onside kick they should kick the
top of the ball so it goes into the ground and bounces. Now it has touched the ground, team B cannot
catch it, Team B can only
recover it. So there is no chance of KCI.
If your situation was not an onside kick, and a really fast Team A player ran as far as the kick then either that really fast guy needs to be coached about KCI, or maybe Team A need to get a better kicker
