Injury Timeout

Have we received any interpretations regarding a player who is injured on the last play of the 1st qtr.  Can that player come back in to start the 2nd qtr?

I believe he can as the half gives the "team doctor" time to evaluate his injury.

He cannot for a time during the quarter.

The rule is the same as when a player loses his helmet - he must remain out of the game for at least one DOWN. Period. If it happens as time expires for a period, he may return after the first play of the next period (which includes halftime).

We have something, just need to find it, from RR, saying the break between quarters is sufficient time for player to be out.   I am pretty sure we have a thread on here where it was discussed in 2010 or 2011

There was a note in 2010 quoted as "Received in my email this morning from a supervisor"

On an injury, a player MUST stay out of the game for one play and the intent of the new emphasis is to require teams to have a process for evaluation of the player.  Therefore, the team cannot take a timeout to buy the player back into the game - he must stay out for one play.  If it is the last play of the half, common sense and intent of the rule will allow for the halftime to be sufficient time for assessment of the injury and he could play to start the third quarter.

But that's not an official RR statement.

I received a reply from Rogers Redding.  Here is the reply along with my question:

Can you clarify the rule for a player who is injured.  I understand the rule does not allow a player to "buy" himself back into the game with a team timeout.  If the injury occurs and then the period or half ends, will that player be allowed to come back for the next play?  I know that for the helmet coming off rule,  1 play means 1 play so I am just curious if the injury rule is different.

  The revised language in Rule 3-3-5-a reads:
In the event of an injured player(s):
1. An official will declare a timeout and the player(s) must leave the game. He must remain out of the game for at least one down. When in question, officials will take a timeout for an injured player.
  My question is; what happen if the player is injured at the last play of a regular period..?, does he must to leave the first play of the next period…?

Answer
   1.  Last play of first or second period: must sit out first play of following
period.  Last play of second or fourth period: may play first play of second
half or extra period.
