Question for the CFO's
« on: October 11, 2012, 11:13:53 AM »
So my ultimate goal is call college football. Even though I am third year high school official, is it to early to start attending the camps for the lower division. For instance, the Gulf South camp is always pretty close and it would be a conference I would love to call in, would it be worth my time to start attending the camp even though I'm fairly certain I wouldn't be picked due to my inexperience? Where and when should I start?

Don't be so sure. We have a 3 year guy on our Div II crew. Several of our supplementals have 3 years.

The GSC Supervisor cares more about your skills than he does how many years you have been calling. If the GSC is a conference where you aspire to work, it would be a GREAT idea to get your foot in the door sooner, rather than later. The experience and visibility are invaluable.

See if you can find the Official's Liaison for the school(s) you live nearest.
He can probably get you on the field for scrimmage(s) in the Spring and/or Fall and can give feedback to the Officials' Supervisor for that Conf.  This way, once you decide to go to camp they at least know who you are & be a step ahead of folks they are seeing for the 1st time.

I generally agree...however, assuming there is "on field" work at this clinic...i would try to get in front of a current college official first on field and get some feedback making sure you are ready to "be seen"...as mentioned, a college practice/scrimmage is a great place for this to happen.  you don't want to get in front of a supervisor before you are ready...
