Enforcement spot
« on: September 10, 2013, 11:22:51 AM »
This play has been bugging me and I can't seem to come up with the correct answer.

A is on B's 30 yard line. A1 throws a screen pass to A2 who scores a TD. Prior to A2 scoring, A3 holds B1 in the end zone. Where is the enforcement spot?

I have my thoughts but can't come up with rule references to support them.

Thanks

This is standard ABO. The result of the play is a TD.

If the hold occurred during a run, it's a running play: basic spot is the end of the run, which is the GL (10-3-3a). The spot of the foul is in the EZ, in advance of the basic spot. Under ABO, we'd enforce from the basic spot, 10 yards, to the B10.

Presumably B would accept the penalty, and it would be A 1/G @ B10, clock on the snap (3-4-3d for the last part).

The way your play reads, the Hold happened during A2's run making this a Running Play and the Basic Spot for a Running Play is the End of the Related Run (10-4-4). The run ended at the Goal Line, enforce the Hold from the Goal Line ... A's ball at the B10 and the Down will be determined by the previous Down and Distance (if the B10 is beyond the Line to Gain it will be 1st & Goal at the 10; if not, replay the down. Snap-Clock)

See Case Book 10.3.3A even though it has a change of possession, it is foul during a run that results in a Touch Down

Maven ... I'm not walking on your post, I'm just a slow search and peck typist. You beat me to the reply.

No worries, mate, especially since we agree! :)

I'm guessing his primary question concerned the enforcement spot, and the rules-basis for claiming that the run ended at the GL. So I provided that cite.
