Unusual Free Kick Out of Bounds Question
« on: June 13, 2014, 02:03:52 PM »
If there is a foul for a free kick out of bounds, and the kick was from on or inside the B30, can the receiving team take a touchback since taking the ball 30 yards from Team A's restraining line puts it in the endzone? I know this is pretty far fetched in NCAA seeing as it would take 35 yards worth of penalties to even get to this point, but in Texas we kick from the 40 so two PF/UNS would do it. So let's say the kick from the B30 is out of bounds at the B5. Is Team B restricted to only two options: a rekick from the B35 or taking the ball at the B10?

I think the option will simply disappear in this scenario. The rules have no provision what to do when an accepted penalty leaves the ball in the non-offending team end zone. A touchback is only available when the ball actually becomes dead in the end zone (or gets returned there due to a fumble forward out of bounds).

I agree.  The one time I saw a FK from B's 30, they went for an onside kick.

That makes sense and what I assumed. Just something that popped in my head today and I wanted to see if anybody had any other thoughts on it. When is the offseason over again?

Would not half distance procedures apply?

Technically the 30 yard option is not a distance penalty therefore half distance provisions do not apply. It is simply a spot the offended team may choose to put the ball in play. As others have noted, it is an option that is unavailable in the play give above.

Are we sure about that?

Quote
No distance penalty, including tries from on or inside the three-yard line, shall exceed half the distance from the enforcement spot to the offending team's goal line.

In this play, we're not going towards the offending team's goal line...
