Tipped Screen Pass and Ineligibles Downfield
« on: October 01, 2014, 10:43:28 AM »
1/10 at midfield.

Offensive linemen release downfield after the snap. QB drops back and throws an intended screen pass. The ball bounces off A33's hands at the A-47 and continues in flight, landing incomplete at the B-43 yardline.

Same play, but the ball is tipped behind the line by B55 instead of A33.

The pass was touched behind the NZ but continued beyond it.

Ineligible downfield in either case?

(I know the prevailing philosophy is not to call ineligible downfield on screen-passes--even if the ball accidentally is thrown a yard beyond the NZ.  My question isn't on the screen-pass philosophy. Looking for rule reference on the forward pass being touched behind the NZ.)

Thanks!

See rule 2-19-3-a. The pass has not crossed the neutral zone in either of your cases. No foul for ineligible downfield.
