LSU v Alabama
« on: November 12, 2014, 03:07:13 PM »
In the overtime period, Alabama moved the ball to the 1 yard line for a first and goal situation. Alabama was assessed a 15 yard dead-ball personnel foul penalty. The ball was moved to the 16 yard line. The refs reset the down to 1st and 10 from the 16, not first and goal from the 16. Are the rules different in college than in the pros b/c I though this would have resulted in first and goal. I have seen some chatter about this situation saying that because it was a new set of downs it should go to first and ten, but again, I have never seen a first and goal become a first and ten (my own thoughts are that is what "first and goal" is all about). Can anyone clarify this? Thanks

The line to gain is established when the ball is ready for play. Because the foul occurred before the ball was ready for play, the line to gain had not yet been established. Once the ball was set at the 16 and blown ready, then it was 1st and 10.

Thanks for the reply. Am I assuming correct that this only applies to college b/c I have never seem 1st and goal reset in the pros?

Not sure about pro but HS (NFHS) specifies that the line to gain is ALWAYS the goalline in OT.

Yes but very possible that a foul carries over from the previous period and causes a 1st and goal from the 25 (or more).

So, in Fed, B is flagged for DPI on A's TD in the first OT possession. After the play, B's coach is flagged for voicing his opinion of the DPI flag. B will now play 1st and goal from the 40? Yikes, that's a steep penalty.

They start at the 10, so 1/10 at the 25

As far as I can tell from the 2010 NFL rule book, the rule is the same in pros as in college and high school. A dead ball foul before the ball is ready for play causes the chains to move.

From the rule book:

Fourth-and-10 on A30. A punt goes to the B30 where kicking team player A1 illegally touches the ball and then falls on it there, after which:
b) receiver B1 commits a personal foul any place on the field. Ruling: B’s ball first-and-10 on B15.

Not in fed rules. It's ALWAYS goal to gain in OT. So say you start at the 40, it's 1/G from the 40. The passer is roughed on an incomplete pass, now you get an automatic first down and it's 1/G from the 25.

There is never a line to gain in overtime.
