Hurry-up on a try down
« on: December 02, 2014, 06:21:31 AM »
A11 completes a short touchdown pass to A88. A88 runs to the umpire and hands him the ball at the three yard line, while his teammates hustle to the line without substituting. All eleven players quickly fall into a scrimmage formation and await the RFP, hoping to catch Team B substituting or otherwise off guard.

As the R or U, when a touchdown is scored, is it proper to delay the RFP longer than we normally would, just as a general practice applied neutrally? Or should we give both teams no more time than on any other down?

Does it matter if Team A has been running the hurry-up for their whole drive, as opposed to a one-time surprise tactic just now?

Also, would you handle it differently in (TX/MA) high school ball versus college?

I didn't see enough Chip Kelly Oregon games to know if they ever tried this, or how the crews handled it.

I would say that the crew should operate at its regular pace. Since the offense doesn't sub, the defense would not be allowed the opportunity to sub freely, as they would if A substituted.

Typically, the reason a RFP is held long on tries is because of the mass subs and the time it takes to clear the field/get the ball in, etc. However this timing should not be much longer than normal.

The play clock is set to 25 seconds and started on the referee's signal so it's not a typical 40-second situation. I'm not sure if it should be delayed for any period of time, but this tells me it is different than a typical between downs situation. I don't see a need to rush it.

I wouldn't blow the RFP until the defense is line up and ready within reason of course

The rule says: "The officials shall make the ball ready for play consistently throughout the game." It also say: "When a team is not ready to play [...] after a score" it is an illegal delay.

I consistently take a bit longer in declaring the ball ready for play for the try, so I would consistently take a bit longer even if team A is rushing to the line without subbing. I would not wait too long for team B to sub and would probably hit them with a delay penalty if they are still in the subbing process - letting team A snap without team B being ready is a recipe for disaster.

For games with replay the crew will take their time to make sure replay has a chance to at least look at the play.
