Pass Play, B Holds (pull and shoot)
« on: October 10, 2017, 09:41:15 AM »
2/10, A-30.  A12 takes the snap and rolls to his right and throws a pass to A22 at the A-45 where he catches the ball and is downed.  Right after the snap, as A12 begins to roll out, B67 grabs lineman A64 and pulls him down to the ground so that B55 can shoot through the line and pursue the passer.  B67 is flagged for holding.

  • The rules are there if you need them.

TexDoc, on the assumption that you mean B67 is flagged for holding, this is a Basic Spot/3 and 1 enforcement foul by B that occurs during a legal forward pass play.  The Basic Spot for non-personal fouls by Team B that occur during a legal forward pass play is the Previous Spot, and fouls by the opponent of the team in possession are penalized from the Basic Spot. 10 yards, repeat the down.  This is not an automatic first down (because the foul was not against an eligible player of Team A), but the yardage would yield a first down.  A, 1/10, A-40.  However, the penalty will be declined, because the result of the play is more advantageous. A, 1/10, A-45.

This is not a penalty that can be "tacked on" to the end of the play.

Fixed the questions.  Yes, this is exactly what I was getting at.  All fouls by B, even personal fouls, used to be previous spot fouls before the rule change.
