"Trick" play - how would you handle this?
« on: August 31, 2018, 12:02:52 PM »
This happened last night at an 8th grade game but the situation can happen at any level.

2-point conversion attempt.  QB A14 hands the ball to running back A10.  As A10 is starting to move towards the goal line, he comes to a stop.....along with almost all of the defense.  Why?  Guard A50 started to vomit (blow chunks, a lot) so the defense stopped thinking the play was dead.  A10 resumes running forward and crosses the goal line.

I thought it was a "trick play" to confuse the defense, when the running back stopped.  I didn't see the guard having issues.  I didn't know about it until the play was complete.  Honest to gosh thought the offense was running something funky because they needed the 2 points to get ahead in the game.

Nothing in the rules covers this specifically.  We allowed the play to continue and we didn't have any push-back from the coaching staff on either side.  Aside from the biohazard on the field, we didn't have anything that would stop the play necessarily.  I thought about this for a few and also after the game.  I believe we did the right thing by letting the play unfold.

Any thoughts on this, regardless of level (NFHS, NCAA, NFL)?

Treat “Chunky” as an injured player.  Let the play conclude, then let the trainers tend to him.

I remember several years ago maybe 15 years at least I was White hat at a 8th grade game and right as the ball was snapped the Nose Guard Blew Chunks everywhere  :puke:. The Play that was being run at the time was a full back dive right at the NG. Needless to say it looked like the parting of the red sea no one on the offense line went to block the NG the fullback stopped and said Nope and then proceeded to run a sweep play.

This happened while the school had a Natural Grass field, The Ground crew came out and Spread Sand on the spot and we played on.
Knock on Wood that was the first and Only time I have had that to Happen

Not Sure what the cleanup procedure would be now that most of my games are on turf
do or do not there is no try
