Another punt play
« on: September 30, 2020, 04:52:28 PM »
K1’s punt rolls to Team R’s 4-yard line where R2 intentionally kicks the ball into R’s end
zone. What's the correct ruling?

Illegal Kick , 1/2 the distance, R's ball 1-10 at their own 2 yard line.

To add - the result of the play prior to enforcing the penalty is a touchback and not a safety.  Kick has not ended yet.

What about the new force from the illegal kick?

as Bossman said --- the kick has not ended until it broke the plane of R's goal line.  The result of the play is a touchback and the play is then over.  Now enforce the foul by R per PSK.

Force is not a factor on kicks going into R's end zone, since they're automatic touchbacks.

Another simple, basic but really important factor to remember about (NFHS) "Kicks" is that there are only two things that END A KICK;
1. A player gains possession or 2. the ball becomes dead while NOT in player possession. (NFHS: 2-24-2)

Batting, muffing, touching, kicking by either team, any number of times in any direction does NOT EVER end a kick, or stop unique "kicking rules " from applying.

You don't consider that to be a new force? A new force can be added to a grounded kick. Not arguing, just trying to get a deeper understanding

You are correct, it's absolutely a new force.  However, force is not a factor on kicks going into R's end zone, since they're automatic touchbacks.  It's still a scrimmage kick.  Illegally kicking the ball does not change its status.  A kick that breaks the plane of the end zone is a touchback.

Remember, guys ,that a new force can be added to a grounded kick going into K's endzone….a play:

     Hans, punting from his endzone, is ogling the prom queen as he shanks a punt. It is bouncing away at A's when R's big ole' Bubba tries to scoop in up. He ,too, spots the prom queen, takes his eye off the ball and muffs it off the pylon. A touchback turns Bubba from a hero to a zero. The prom queen decides to date Simon ,a band player who helps her with her homework.
