Coin Toss w/ Coaches

Has anyone seen any written document that allows coaches to do the coin toss in pregame?  I know we do it but all I have found that allows coaches to do the coin toss is to start the extra period.  I was putting together some training information and was going to cover the coin toss and I couldn't find anything on coaches doing the pregame toss.

I want to say that last year, because of COVID, didn't we have the option of doing coin toss in pregame?  Looking at UIL website, all the COVID-related pages seem to no longer be there... https://www.uiltexas.org/policy/covid-19

This is where I would have presumed that anything COVID related regarding football would have been posted.

For decades we have been doing coin tosses up by the locker room or during the pregame warmup with the coaches.  Then we'd do a mock toss with the captains.

Jason,
UIL Exception 28, referencing rule 3-1-1-e, makes it only RECOMMENDED, that the toss be conducted at 3 minutes before kickoff, with captains. By this exception, coaches that know this exception, have the ability to have the toss at any time before kickoff, and between coaches, captains, grandmothers, parakeets… whatever they want.
Best not to ask. Just let them know that you’ll call for captains at 5 minutes, and conduct the toss at 3 minutes. Rarely get an objection.

Did also with some weird results!

Winning coach. “ we defer”
Losing coach     “ we will defend the north end”
Winning coach   “We will kick”

We had a game without a toss of the coin.  The visiting coach wasn't at the designated spot at the time that was predetermined and the home coach was tired of waiting.  The visiting coach finally walks up and the home coach announces, "You won the toss, take a pick on what you want to do."

AFAIK, that is the protocol in PA. The actual toss is done in private with the coaches ~30 minutes prior to the game, with the ceremonial toss happening with the captains 5 minutes prior at midfield. However, all the tosses I've been a part of in the DMV were live at midfield, 5 minutes before the game.

I've had a couple of games go off without a coin toss as well.  Pre-game discussion with coaches (individually)
Visiting Coach:  if we win the toss we want to defer and want to defend the scoreboard end
Home Coach:  if we win the toss we want the ball and want like to go towards the scoreboard to start the game if possible
Referee:  Perfect, no coin toss to screw anything up.  Home team receives opposite scoreboard end; visiting team has choice start 2nd half.  Both coaches get ready for kickoff happy they got what they wanted
