Towel police is my least favorite duty.  Invariably it happens in October when some players get the pink towels but not all so you have white and pink, usually.  November brings the camo towels and again, some get the camo, some keep the white.

I've seen very nice team towels dating back to my high school days with embroidered team logos or player numbers that shouldn't be a violation.
As long as we don't have some player using the towel to taunt or be unsportsmanlike, i.e. writing "F.U. Tigers" with a Sharpie, let it go.  A ban on yellow or gold colored towels is reasonable.

I'm also to the point that I really don't care where they wear wristbands or play cards.  They're no more a danger to rip off a finger than a facemask or knee brace.  Granted, I've no idea how they read a play card hanging off their belt but that's their problem.

Towels, Sweatbands, logo specifications, creative messaging are all perfect places for the fertile, creative mind of the American Teenager (and permissive supervisor/parent) to compete with each other to out-stupid & run amok with creative exceptions.  The quickest way to relive " old high school ways" is to try and expand, an ever lengthening list of exceptions, or allowances, to encourage creativity.  Simple is better, 1 or 2  required design limitations EVERYONE MUST adhere to, eliminates the  endless "but", "what if", "how about" nonsense that would INEVITABLY follow (just like it did, BEFORE limitations were designated.

Just returned from Windy Indy after completion of our NFHS Football Committee Meeting. I have to remain mum until fully approved, which is usually 2-3 weeks. It comes via a NFHS press release and as soon as I know (as soon as I get to ma' keyboard), you'll know.

Assuming the 'nc' is where you call home, Mark Dreibelbis could apply 1-7-9 (the state's right's rule) and make up something up. Keeping safety in mind, a couple of from my daze of youth are: (1) Punt, pass, & kick- both teams would put out their best for distance and accuracy. (2) Set-back ..punters shine...starts with punt @ K's 40, kick ends and R replaces K from end of kick, once a punt reaches the end zone you have a winner...

How about a hockey style shootout?
From the 50, Home gets to put a snapper out there to snap to a teammate, who then has to beat a Visitor defender to score a TD (snapper only snaps, deep or hand-to-hand, then 'freezes'). Then Visitor gets to do the same thing. Minimum 5 rounds. Each BC and defender is different (but BC1 could become defender 2, vice versa). Most TDs wins. If tied after 5 rounds, keep going, one round at a time, until there is a winner.

It seems that the short lived XFL had an unusual replacement for the coin toss. The ref would toss the ball between two big ole' grunting Bubbas. the first to gnaw off the end of the ball would win the 'toss' -- whatever. To preserve the safety of the student-athlete, this match should pit the two head coaches. Like the formal duels of yesteryear , each coach could choose a Second that was employed by his school district such as the wresting coach, math teacher or the like. If the head coach became ill  the Second would become the 'First' sorta' bike MLB's DH.

*If Sec. of Tres. Alexander Hamilton was 'ill' would our Vice President ,Arron Burr, shot his 'second" ? 

* Would AH still make it to the $10 bill if he hadn't been shot ?

* Tom Jefferson was Burr's boss, yet he got put on the $ 2 bill.

* Is this why we see much more $10 bills than $2 bills in today's society 

* We once printed bills in $1,2,5, 10, 20, 50,100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and $100,000 denominatiions.with those above $100 generally only used for transfers between banks. Our hi-tech world has made transfers smoother.

* If you had the whole collection, you would hold $116,688  . Of the 12 bills, only 3 are not presidents. Alex is one.. who are the other two  .If Tom Brady replaced Tom Jefferson of the $2, there would be three

Thanks ,Ump and Elvis    .  While I knew that most of you Knew of "Uncle Ben" , I figured not as many would be as up on Simon Chase, so I googled. It's response was: "Chase Simon was a basketball player from Michigan." So, I'll go by memory. Simon Portland Chase was Lincoln's Sec of Tres.(if you're in the US Tresuary you probably gain brownie-points by suggesting your boss to be on the newest bill). . It is said that Simon was once asked why his middle name was Portland. It is said that Simon than said : " Father and mother used to enjoy  LONG vacations in Portland (Maine) just before I was born  ." One could only wonder what ma and pa Chase were doing in Maine beyond eating lobster

I was about to note that Mark is retiring, but you mentioned it first. I hope whoever takes his place understands the shoes they have to fill.

For NFL rules, I would only remove the "unless the first team scores a touchdown" rule. The field position aspect of the overtime, I think, is important and needs to be preserved there.

For NFHS, with the unpredictability of the kicking game, I wouldn't change it unless you decide to move back to the 15 or something to be able to establish a 1st and 10 that can be shifted due to penalty or having a new set of downs gained by the offense. I could see the argument for that, but also against it and don't feel things need chagned.

The games that last longer allow for more time to stray from being proper  . It was back in last century that my wife and my sister were making a family dinner while I took my 10 year old nephew , Avery, to a UMaine - URI football game. UMaine won, but it took SIX overtimes  .  . We sat with some of my old frat brothers and they inadvertently taught him some new verbs and an anti-Rhode Island cheer : "URI...URI...URIne.. ".

We were late for dinner that didn't thrill the rest of the family, Avery excitedly said " MOM, I LEARNED A NEW CHEER, 'URI...URINE... .' " The following year the NCAA tweaked it's overtime rule. TV schedules  and family dinners approved.

I get the business aspect of it, but as a football fan, if I'm watching a really competitive game that's going to triple OT, I don't want the prevailing attitude to shift to "Let's wrap this up, because I've got places to be!"

Then again, that's also my mindset when I see people arguing about rules changes designed to make games shorter. I'm here because I enjoy it, and not looking to find ways to get home faster.

Television schedules aside, football games take A Lot out of participants, and the risk of injury, both SERIOUS as well as not, increases along with fatigue.  The object of the game is to "out play/out smart" your opponent, not outlast them, at least to the point where fatigue, rather than talent, skill or effort, may well be the deciding factor.  No problem with trying to tweak  the rules to produce a victor, but teams competing their best, according to "the rules in play" ending in a hard fought draw, more so confirms no losers, as it denies a single superior.

I think most of us here would agree with you. Sadly, the folks in charge are depending on TV advertiser’s to not only pay for broadcasting rights, but, now, they will need as many advertisers as possible to whom to point their players, to get NIL fees. He who can get the most NIL advertisers for their players wins. To get as many advertisers as possible in a 3-hour window, the game needs to be shortened. At least that’s the way TV looks at it. Sad, but true.

1995...Collage Hockey Frozen Four … Semi- Final....UMaine vs Michigan...ESPN

Game went triple OT, A motley group at our family room were glued to our TV. The intermission between 2nd & 3rd seemed kinda' long....a good friend called from his car phone....

FRIEND : "WHOW    HOW ABOUT THAT  … !!"
ME : "I sure hope we can hold on.... "
FRIEND : Whata' you mean  WE JUST DID  .. BRING ON BU  !"
….I WAS STILL ON THE PHONE WHEN THE 3RD OT STARTED....1:15 IN , MAINE SCORED THE WINNING GOAL  :'( :'( ...

My friend couldn't tell the future, just ESPN $ had ran out of rented time on a satellite $ and was negotiating to buy some more. The tape delay was about 4 minutes. Gary Thorne was the ESPN play-by-play announcer and a Mainer . He was very  embarrassed  ,  Our group turned into a  VICTORY PARTY WITH A STATE WIDE CHANT OF " BRING ON BU" (our then arch-rival)…..
