New Mechanic for Deeps?
« on: February 25, 2023, 11:08:37 AM »
While watching the superbowl I noticed what I thought to be the S out of position during deep sideline passes. He was extremely close to the action and there was no way he could have made the pylon had a catch and run occurred. Come to find out from a current D1 college official, that is the new NFL mechanic and apparently it’s trickling down to College. The NFL apparently wants the deep official stopped and at the “mesh” which I understand is the point where receiver, defender and the ball are during a catch attempt. I may have this all wrong but the S used the same mechanic all night.

It is a new direction in officiating being promoted by the NFL, and is making its way into NCAA officiating. They want the deep guys to get to a position and “settle” to observe action. Apparently, somebody thinks that officials can’t see action clearly/appropriately if they are moving.

Not a fan. That leaves ONLY the B to observe action at the GL when the deep wing doesn’t happen to ‘settle’ on the goal line extended. When the action is near the sideline, the deep wing will probably be way too close to see the action well. Although not perfect, I’d rather have an angle that I can see between the opponents than through one or other of the opponents.
Having worked S in FBS for 10 years, I can testify that I had no problem getting a good look at action while moving.
Seems to be another WA thing that will ultimately prove to be a bad idea.

I'm not knowledgeable enough about any mechanics to have an opinion worth anything, but if I recall correctly, during last year's super bowl, I think at the beginning of the 3rd quarter there was what looked to be a missed FMM call, because the deep wing, well, wasn't, and would have had to look through the players to see it.

(Not saying it was a missed call, but I believe the positioning of the deep wing would make this very difficult to see to make a judgement on, to Elvis' point.)

It's not so much as *where* the official settles, it's *when*. The point is for the official's eyes to be stabilized. The change just shows up more in the NFL because the players are able to close the gap faster. Like a lot of things mechanics related, it has pros and cons. The trade off here is being still vs losing the angle every so often. Whether its worth it or not, I think is yet to be seen over a long enough time period to make an informed decision. And whether you accept it or not, the fact is that your eyes and brain do not process action as well when you're moving.
