What are....
« on: October 30, 2025, 11:30:54 AM »
"...winning words...?" Every week, Shaw says to use our "winning words." Anybody have any idea what those are? How about:
-Get your a-- off the field.
-What makes you think that is legal?
-Gee coach, I've never heard that one before.
-You asked a question; I gave you the answer; if you don't like the answer, I can't help you.

(In full disclosure, as much as I would like to say these things regularly, I've only actually used the last one.  :))

Have a great Thursday.

'Which is worse, my officiating, or your play calling?'

I've been tempted to use this one before.

Towards the end of the first half, the coach says, "You're one of the worst officials I've ever seen."

My reply, "Coach just wait until the second half when that guy over there comes to your sideline."

I wish we would have had the 'swapping sidelines' mechanic during my days.

Coach told me once “ that is the worst call I have ever seen”.

Told him “ I agree, I would have run a draw play”.

Laughed his butt off and walked away.

The targeting foul on the first play is a complete overreaction to the Texas-ASU no-call in the playoff last year. They have really stretched the definition of “indicator” to support those types of hits being called TGT.

I think this is the wrong thread... but I do agree with you. I don't think he is defenseless; he is positioning himself to escape the defender, he definitely sees him coming, and he has decommitted form throwing the ball well before he is hit. Had he not been off balance and gone flying, no one would bat an eye.

"Coach, am I telling at you? Then why are you yelling at me?"

"You asked me a question, do you want me to answer it or do you just want to keep yelling?"

"Is that the language you use in the classroom?"
"Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it's wrong."

That reminded me of a great quote from a coach one time.  It was 11/5/2011 and the Alabama/LSU "Game of the century" was starting at 7:00.  I was at another conference school that night for a 7:00 kickoff.  This was a short conversation a few minutes before kickoff:

Home team coach - "Grant, why are we kicking this game off at 7:00?"
Me - "Coach, I'm not sure.  ESPN tells us when to start so that's when we start. :)"
Coach - "Don't they know there is a big game on TV tonight in Alabama?"

Later in the game, the coach came up to me, pointed at the ribbon in the stadium showing other scores, and said, "Grant, look...Alabama is ahead 6-3."

So, how is your team doing, Coach? (Focus...focus)  ;D

It was a money game for the opponent.  The home team was up by 30+ at halftime.  He wasn't focused on his game at all.  :)

2 of my all time faviorates.
Coach--Did you loose your cell phone?
Me--No coach, why?
Coach--You've missed 5 calls already!

Coach--Can you flag me for what I think?
Me--No coach. I'm not a mind reader.just ask my wife.
Coach-- I think you suck!

In both of these cases I just started laughing my butt off. The second one was a good friend of mine when I was working a high school JV game.

Back before an UNS carried an automatic first down a varsity coach who was way too involved in a sub-varsity game wanted his first down.  He was adamant we didn't know what we were doing and wouldn't let it go.  He told us "You will never call another game at school X again".  My co-official who has a very dry sense of humor calmly stated "Coach, we never asked you for any favors".  The coach left after that year and our Chapter hasn't covered them since, so he was correct...

Military guys may appreciate this (or not):
For whatever reason an asst coach was unhappy and complaining to our H and generally said something along the lines of:
"...well when I was a Capt in the Army....."
The H whipped around, went brim.to.brim and said "I'm a MGySgt (E9) in the Marine Corps (he was retired, but "once a marine", right). I out rank you so don't go and try an pull rank here."
Asst had a surprised look and walked away...

Halftime, I ask our H: I'm not a military guy, but if he's an officer, how do you out rank him?
H: lemme ask you something, how long you think it take to be a Capt?
Me: i donno, 5yr?
H: how long does it take to be an E9?
Me: i donno, 20yr?
H: I salute birds and stars.
