Regarding play #3, I’ve long whined about the silliness of using the 40-second play clock for the first down following a free kick, only to reset it to 25 to avoid the dreaded DOG after a kickoff. This is the first time I’ve seen Shaw actually make a point that we shouldn’t have pumped the play clock due to A taking its sweet time getting their personnel ready.

What I’m unsure about is if the R would have pumped the play clock without the QB asking for it. I’m guessing yes.

There are some organizations at the highest level that have stated very explicitly to the staff that they do not want to see any DOG coming out of a kickoff, punt or COP except in blatantly extreme circumstances. Those orgs are more or less instructed to pump the play clock until the cows come home. Do as the boss says I suppose.

Not really an issue after scrimmage kicks or COP since the R is controlling when to start the :25. I guess I just don’t understand why there’s such a stigma about DOG after a kickoff, but gotta keep your coordinator happy.

If the goal of using :40 after a kickoff is to speed up the game, letting A lollygag and then pumping to 25 just doesn’t make any sense.

What bothers me more after the kickoff, Team A is ready to go, but team B is still huddled up near the sideline.  How do you all handle that?  I've bumped it up to 25 before and then warn them that if they don't hurry and get out, then the DOG will be on them.
