Strange punt play
« on: September 19, 2010, 07:29:10 PM »
Saw this at an NCAA game this weekend:

Team A 4/4/A-38. Punt is tipped by an on-rushing lineman. Ball goes high in the air and is coming down at the A-40. B75 and A82 await its downward flight and there is jostling prior to B75 jumping to tip the ball first and then A82 tips it and the ball is caught by A35 who falls to the ground at the A-42. Ruling ??

What game?

Sounds like kick catch interference on Team A.

Mike, You won't find it on video. It was a D III game. The crew ruled a touch by the receiving team and then a recovery by the kicking team. The major on-field discussion by the crew revolved around who touched it first and then whether the ball had crossed the NZ. All valid points and it was not clear cut as far the touching and crossing the NZ.  It wasn't until the ride home that the issue of KCI was discussed.
It was a good case of being focused on only one aspect of the play (touching and crossing the NZ) and not taking into account KCI - who ever thinks of providing a defensive tackle KCI protection ?

Heck we give it to those big boys on the front line of Team B on KO's "all the time".  ;-)
