Guys,

I am in the market for a new family vehicle that will double as a crew vehicle during football season. Among some of my concerns are: Safety (always 1st), Comfort (5 adults) and fuel economy. Please take a moment to answer a few questions to help me decide on a vehicle.

For all games that you work 5 man crews:

Do you generally travel to the gamesite with your 4 other crew members?

If you do generally travel together, what make and model vehicle do you travel in?

What are your likes/dislikes about your crew's "game-night" vehicle in regards to safety, fuel economy, comfort, etc.

If your crew does not arrive together, what is the primary reason for taking separate vehicles?

If your crew arrives in separate vehicles, do the schools pay mileage for 2 vehicles?

Per game, how many miles do you average round trip?

What make and model vehicle do you travel in?

What do you like/dislike most about your "game-night" vehicle in regards to fuel economy, comfort, etc?

Who gets the mileage money? (driver, divided amongst the crew, or other [please specify])

For those who work with the same crew each week:

Does one crew member drive every week or do some/all crew members take turns driving their vehicle?

If you could choose only one vehicle to drive/ride to every game, what would it be? (Make and Model)   Why?

Thank you in advance for you answers.

Do you generally travel to the gamesite with your 4 other crew members?
We are spread out amongst 3 counties so we go to one central meeting place and try to ride together.

If you do generally travel together, what make and model vehicle do you travel in?
Varies- I've ridden in mini-vans, Tahoes, Excursions, Expeditions, 4 door Tundras and F150's and Camrys.

What are your likes/dislikes about your crew's "game-night" vehicle in regards to safety, fuel economy, comfort, etc.
My only safety concern has to do with "who is driving" not what they are driving.  I've found the Fords- Expedition and Excursion- to be the most comfortable but they suck the gas.  The Chrysler van is nice- Voyager or something like that I think.

If your crew does not arrive together, what is the primary reason for taking separate vehicles?
1) "real job" requirements, 2) too disparate direction of travel for one official, 3) college officials having to depart to their Saturday site

If your crew arrives in separate vehicles, do the schools pay mileage for 2 vehicles?
No mileage is paid- flat game fee per official.

Per game, how many miles do you average round trip?
60-100

What make and model vehicle do you travel in?
Toyota Tundra 4 dr.

What do you like/dislike most about your "game-night" vehicle in regards to fuel economy, comfort, etc?
17 hwy MPG- bleh.  No bed cover so travel bags can get wet.  Is 4WD in case of inclement weather and can manage to haul 5 officials a reasonable distance without being too painful.

Who gets the mileage money? (driver, divided amongst the crew, or other [please specify])
Driver, normally the WH.

Do you generally travel to the gamesite with your 4 other crew members?
We alwasy try to travel together but there are times and game locations that make it difficult

If you do generally travel together, what make and model vehicle do you travel in?
We have used Tahoes, Vans, Ford 350

What are your likes/dislikes about your crew's "game-night" vehicle in regards to safety, fuel economy, comfort, etc.
We normally do not have severe weather issues (ie. ice/snow). Fuel economy is dead trying to transport 5 grown men anywhere. Comfort is a consideration on long trips. Number one choice would be a van or Tahoe/Suburban type vehicle

If your crew does not arrive together, what is the primary reason for taking separate vehicles?

We all live in different areas and occasionally have a game "in the middle" of where we live. Even on those occasions we try to meet and arrive together.

If your crew arrives in separate vehicles, do the schools pay mileage for 2 vehicles?
No, Schools in Texas only pay one vehicle for varsity games. We usually either split the mileage or one driver gets the miles and pays for supper for the other driver.

Per game, how many miles do you average round trip?
50-75

What make and model vehicle do you travel in?

Depends on who is driving. We have used vans, Tahoes, etc

What do you like/dislike most about your "game-night" vehicle in regards to fuel economy, comfort, etc?

Comfort is the main concern

Who gets the mileage money? (driver, divided amongst the crew, or other [please specify])

driver or split with other driver, supper, etc

For those who work with the same crew each week:

Does one crew member drive every week or do some/all crew members take turns driving their vehicle?

Normally same one but can change due to logistics

If you could choose only one vehicle to drive/ride to every game, what would it be? (Make and Model)   Why?

motor home, then I can go pee when I need to  ;D

Do you generally travel to the gamesite with your 4 other crew members?

Yes, we always dirve together.

If you do generally travel together, what make and model vehicle do you travel in?

Ford Explorer 04 or Chevy Tahoe 06

What are your likes/dislikes about your crew's "game-night" vehicle in regards to safety, fuel economy, comfort, etc.

Too small somtimes on longer trips. Limited stoage room behind back seat.  We stick BJ in the back.

If your crew arrives in separate vehicles, do the schools pay mileage for 2 vehicles?

We almost always take one but the schools will pay for two.

Per game, how many miles do you average round trip?

Regular season ~70  Playoffs much more, this year average 346. Rented Yukon for longest trip only because we got sweetheart deal.

What make and model vehicle do you travel in?

Personally I drive a 10 Tundra

Who gets the mileage money? (driver, divided amongst the crew, or other [please specify])

Driver gets it all. But he buys dinner after the game.

For those who work with the same crew each week:

Does one crew member drive every week or do some/all crew members take turns driving their vehicle?

Those that have adequate vehicles rotate.

If you could choose only one vehicle to drive/ride to every game, what would it be? (Make and Model)Why?

One guy had a conversion van, that was a great ride not too practical for everyday use but for traveling to  games it was sweet.  Driven to many a game in a surburban, this would be my choice.

If your crew does not arrive together, what is the primary reason for taking separate vehicles?

If your crew arrives in separate vehicles, do the schools pay mileage for 2 vehicles? One conf is flat fee.  Other 3 pay mileage.

Per game, how many miles do you average round trip?  175-200

What make and model vehicle do you travel in?  Chev Tahoe or Ford Expedition EL

What do you like/dislike most about your "game-night" vehicle in regards to fuel economy, comfort, etc?

Foureyed,

here are my crew answers:

1# of crew that travels together; we normally have 4 of us travel tog ether, but this past season it got down to 3 due to my BJ moving way south of where we usually meet up together.  We then meet up near the school at a fast food place to join together and start talking football.

2.  Make and model of transportation  I (crew chief) drive a 07 Nissan Murano which gets about 23-24 MPG  My Referee drives a big 08 Lincoln so the crew does travel in comfort.  When my U drives he has a company owned 08 Tahoe deluxe which is roomier and also very confortbale.  I would suspect the Lincoln get maybe 20-21 MPG and the big Tahoe maybe 15-17 MPG  All very safe and plenty of room for everyone and equipment.

3.  We are all very good drivers and all feel very safe while on the road.  We all like to be comfortable and have room to stretch out before the game.

4. Main reason for all not traveling together-- Distance from where we start from either home and or work and also what schools  we are going to.

5.  Here in Northeast Ohio no schools pay travel, but in my crew, who ever drives all the rest pay the driver
$5.00 per man.  Kind of evens out the  cost a little bit.

6.  Round trip per game-- any where from 60 to 120 miles round trip

7.  2007 Nissan Murano  A very nice ride, somewhat good milage, and a very quite car inside, so who ever is sitting in the back seat can hear.

8.  Same answere as above even if we are traveling in the Lincoln

9.  Driver per answer # 5

10.  We all try to take turns driving, but someone always gets driving more than others.  Usually Me!

11.  I would take my Nissan on every trip.  I really enjoy the ride and the quietness of the ride.  Plus, it has a great re-sale value.

This is a great survey and I enjoyed reading the replies.  Good luck on the upcoming season.
