snap over punters head
« on: September 27, 2011, 11:35:41 PM »
please help, i was at a div 2 NCAA college football game.  Center snaps the ball over the punters head, the ball is at the punters 5 yd line on the ground.  Punter kicks the ball off the ground out of his own endzone.  What's the call...the ref i was with says safety, but it was ruled on the field illegal touching.  half the distance to the goal line and ball was given to the defensive team.  Coaches were going nuts...whats the right ruling..please help

illegal kicking (not touching).  team B could've accepted the result of the play, a safety, and taken the 2 pts.  or they can have the penalty enforced. 10 yards from the spot of the foul (half the distance in this case) plus loss of down, which gives team B the ball.

had the ball been in the endzone when the punter illegally kicked it, the only outcome is safety.

I wonder why they dont coach the punters to try and scoop up the ball and quick kick it. or at least pick it up and get in the endzone so they only give up 2 pts. maybe they dont want the punter getting creamed.

AB might have some insight to this? :)

Depends where the ball is.

If it's already over his head and in the end zone, just kick it out the back of the end zone.

If it's not yet in the end zone, our punters go through a 4 step process in evaluating what to do:
1.  If you can still punt it, punt it.
2.  If you see an eligible receiver, pass it, perferably incomplete.  At least the ball is returned to the LOS.
3.  If there is no receiver, run with it.
4.  If all else fails, fall on it.

I say our punters go through a 4 step evaluation process.  In reality, these are 17 and 18 year old kids trying to make a decision when all h#ll just broke loose.  You hope they remember the steps, or at a minimum, don't let the defense pick it up.  Even falling on it inside the 10 beats letting the defense picking it up and running it in for a TD.  Live to fight one more play.

As for punters getting creamed, once the snap goes over the punter's head, that's pretty much a given.

There would not be a foul if the would-be punter batted the loose ball from the field of play and over the endline or recovered the ball and threw it over the endline.
