Was he grounding it or did he just make a terrible pass towards the receiver?

The announcer said he was throwing it away.   ;)

He had to see the guy was blanketed and had probably been coached to throw it into the stands if that happened.  Dang near made it there.

Why would it be grounding?  He wasn't under pressure, he was outside the tackle box, the ball crossed the LOS, and there was a receiver in the general area.  This isn't grounding for a number of reasons.

he WAS trying to avoid loss of yardage, the ball was way too far out of bounds to have a receiver in the area, and he was not the person who originally received the snap

Absolutely correct, shame on me for not remembering that part of the exception.

As for the attempting to avoid yardage, I don't think so, I think he was trying to complete a pass.  He certainly wasn't under immediate pressure, he didn't HAVE to get rid of it to avoid a loss at that point.  This isn't a QB, it's a tailback who simply doesn't throw very well.

As for "too far OOB", that's judgment.  Even if I'm the defensive coach, I wouldn't expect an IG call here.

I agree with the non-call. Here you have a running back(not someone who is usually adept at throwing the ball) throwing deep on the run. Like ATL Blue said, he wasn't pressured so I don't really think he threw it OOB on purpose. Seems more like a bad pass by a guy who doesn't have the skill set to be throwing balls on the run.

He had 1 receiver only.  And that guy was covered so well not even a healthy Peyton Manning could have put the ball in there.  He had nobody to throw to. He was about to go out of bounds for a yardage loss.  He did what all well-coached QBs do....throw it to the 5th row.  He is just so crappy a passer it did not get there.  That should be a foul when the QB does it and so should it be when the RB does it

About to go out of bounds?  He wasn't even to the numbers yet.  He was 14 yards from the sideline.

And of he could have put the ball over the inside shoulder of the receiver, that's a completed pass.  But throwing the ball back inside by a RH passer while rollong right is tough, and obviously beyond his ability.

In the end, it's a judgment call, and I don't have a problem with the official's judgment in this case.

Eeeg. I'd ... keep the flag in the pocket on this one. Ball got away on 'im. Maybe. Probably. Possibly.

I think there's a decent chance he was just chucking it away because his man was covered and he would've taken a loss if he tried to run.

but he's got a receiver in the area. he threw it downfield. it's not like he dumped it right at the front stake. and the ball landed, what, 2.5 yards OOB?

I have no flag on this.
