Retiring

After 15 years I am retiring from officiating.  I plan to spend more time with family and friends, playing more golf, and attending Cincinnati Bearcats football games.  I am having surgery on my foot in January, and suffer from arthritis in mt hands and feet.

My last game was this past Friday night at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, working a game between Trinity (USAToday#2) and St. Xavier.  A photo of the crew is attached.  From left to right is Rick Scheper (me), Chris Kent, Bryan Turner, Daniel Brummett and Larry Ballinger.

This forum and others like it have been a great help to officials everywhere.  Keep up the good work, and good luck to all in the future.

Good luck, Rick, and enjoy the Bearcats.  Their KO returner (Abernathy) is one of my former players.

How is the knee doing?

AB, the knee is great.  Now I've got foot trouble due to arthritis.  And I'm waiting for Ralph David Abernathy IV to do two things:  1) Decide on a shortened name, and 2) break loose on a long kick return.

I'm sad to see hear you are retiring, but I wish you the best in your retirement from officiating.  Get your foot taken care of so you can lower your handicap.  :thumbup

Good luck with everything you do!  Does your association allow you to become a clock operator?  You can at least stay with the game then.

#2 has a good chance of happening.  #1 won't.

When I did our roster his junior year, I put "Ralph Abernathy".  Mom called the athletic office and pitched a fit.  We changed it to "Ralph David Abernathy".  Another fit pitched.  In order to keep the peace, we changed it again to "Ralph David Abernathy IV".  Around here, he was simply known as "RDA" or Ralph.

I don't know how the kid turned out as well as he did, but he is a very respectful, level headed kid with whom we never had one minute of trouble.  He has also done some great interviews on being the grandson of a tremendous leader.  Thankfully, the press left his father out of the conversation.

Around these parts the host schools have their own COs and chain crews.  Officials just call the games.  I may on occassion keep the foul chart for my old crew.  But only occasssionally.

I too am retiring from on field work after 35 years.  A calcium deposit on my heel makes it too painful to run and at my age I am not having surgery just to work a ball game.  I am still active in my local chapter currently serving as President and will work clocks in addition to observing our new officials at the sub- varsity level.

It has been a great run with lots of good memories to go with the good friends I have made. aWaRd aWaRd

Rick, good luck in the future. I have enjoyed your input on this and other forums. You may not remember this but we did Exchange a few PMs on common game opponents we had in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky several years ago. I hoped getting the knee fixed would keep you going but I guess its like an old car, fix one thing and something else goes. Keep lurking here and jump in anytime. Once again good luck in the future.

That is one of the hardest decisions to make, and I think I speak for all of us when I say thanks to both of you for your time and effort, and that we hope you will stay active on the board and in the community.

Rick, I'm late to the party but wanted to wish you the very best in all your future endeavors. Good men like you are great examples for all and you will be missed as an on-the-field official. You have been an inspiration to us all. Good luck, my friend.
