Video Request - Mizzou/Tech (End of game)
« on: November 21, 2011, 09:09:12 PM »
At the end of the game, Tech QB throws a pass that is batted in the air.  A Mizzou DL runs under the ball and w/o contact fields the ball at the 6 and runs backwards to the 2 before falling down/being touched by a Tech defender.

The H holds the possession spot at the 6 and the ball is spotted there.  Just before the snap, the L comes running in and the ball is moved back to the 4.  The R explains the move is because the Mizzou DL was airborne when catching the ball at the 6 and landed on the ground at the 4 before going down at the 2.

Can somebody post a video clip of this play?  The play is at the very end of the game (here's full game video ---> http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/source/espn3/id/329563/ )

Interested to hear the thoughts of others.  IMO his momentum carried him back to the 2 yard line and the ball should be spotted at the 4 or 6 (depending if you think he did/didn't go airborne to catch the ball).  However, I've heard others say that he ran himself backwards voluntarily after catching the ball and thus should be down at the 2.

Momentum is not applicable on this play as it ended in the field of play.  He was not really contacted until going down at the 2 or 3.   i have the video and will post later

The L on this game is the one who came in to get the ball moved.  That spot turned out to be crucial as each time they took a knee it moved them back further.  I'm still concerned about the offside call in the other thread.

TXMike is on point as there is no momentum exception applicable here, and as the R announced, the player went down on his own and was not tackled.  I believe that the corrected spot should have been approximately the 2 yard line.  IMO it was immaterial as the game then ended with the QB kneeing it out.  Not sure why the visible wing official is holding a spot at the 5 yard line where they originally spotted the ball, since as previously noted this is not a forward progress spot or momentum exception case.

I think the only material part here is that Tech had 2 timeouts left and Mizzou wouldn't have been able to snap it and take a knee 3 times from the 2 yard line.  They would've had to run 1 or 2 plays to create space for the QB to take a knee without the risk of going in the endzone.

Thanks for the reminder on momentum.  I took the season off from officiating (too much work travel) and am getting rusty about some of the finer points.  Thanks for the conversations yall have here as it helps keep my mind in the right place!

Looks to me like the S has the right spot.
