Forward progress situation.

Just curious about a situation which arose in the Wildcard game between Detroit and New Orleans this past Saturday. New Orleans was 4th and 1, and Drew Brees kind of jumped over the pile reaching the ball forward, which gave them a first down, however he then proceeded to pull the ball back towards his body, which in my opinion brought the ball behind the first down distance. Seeing as the offense retreated back on their own accord, and hence turning the ball over off downs, could Detroit have challenged that? Has a situation like that ever happened from what anyone remembers where a line official makes the proper spot with the ball being short of the first down?
