2012 Sioux Empire Football Officials Clinic
Big News—It is NOT Father’s Day weekend this year.
This Clinic runs concurrently with the Sanford Health/Augustana Football Camp which gives us ten (10) high school football teams who participate in full contact, live scrimmages. With these live scrimmages we have a wonderful resource and teaching tool for a hands on football clinic. Rarely can you find this kind of activity out of season, and it has paid dividends for those officials who have participated in this clinic in the past.
We will again be privileged to have several “celebrity” clinicians participate. We have invited and expect to receive commitments from many of our past clinicians and a few new ones, which will be announced shortly along with a full agenda for the clinic.
Bill Carollo will again be with us for the first day, and will deliver the keynote address for the clinic on Sunday. Bill is currently the Director for Officiating for the Midwest Football Officials Alliance, which includes the Big Ten, the MidAmerican and the Missouri Valley Conferences. Prior to that Carollo spent 20 years in the NFL, including working two Super Bowls.
We again count ourselves fortunate to have both Joe Larrew and Carl Madsen, two NFL veterans from St Louis, return this year. Joe and Carl have been with us since the inaugural years of this clinic, and have returned regularly to renew acquaintances and share their knowledge.
Big Ten official, Bill LeMonnier, a Chicago area Big Ten official, who worked the first ever Big Ten Championship game last year will be making his fourth appearance at the clinic. Mike Spanier, a seasoned NFL line judge, from Minnesota and a favorite of many Midwestern officials is expected back, as is John (Butch) Mascerello from Nebraska (Big 12), Dave Chesney from Michigan (Big Ten) and Mike Carr from Wisconsin (MAC)
We have also extended invitations to NFL officials Clete Blakeman (Nebraska) and Jon Lucivansky (Wisconsin), and to Dave Oliver (Kansas) of the Big 12 to join us this year.
We are putting together what we think will be an outstanding agenda and securing commitments from our clinicians for this summer, but wanted to give you a chance to block out the dates earlier this year. We expect another record turnout for this year’s event and we are still keeping the cost down--$100, if you register before May 15, 2012 and $125 after May 15
We have space for 60 officials for on field scrimmages, and that will be on a first come, first serve basis. In addition, we will have 30 slots for field clinicians—guys who will work one on one by position with the officials working on the field. Our field clinicians will be selected from among the registrants based on their experience and ability to offer constructive on-field critique to the working officials, and will be supervised by our “celebrity” clinicians.
As in the past, the format will blend large group sessions, a panel discussion, breakout sessions, extensive video from high school, college and the NFL with the on-field work. Each crew will be video taped at least once while working on the field, and will have a chance to go over their on field experience with one of our clinicians, another feature which can be most revealing.
There is also be time to rub shoulders with other officials and the “celebrity” officials when we feed our attendees our famous “Burgers and Brats” supper on Sunday, and breakfast and lunch on Monday. On Sunday night, we will have a social event that should add to the experience. We will also have a memento gift for all attendees.
HOUSING: With regard to housing, we are again able to work with Augustana College on dorm rooms. While that may sound a little Spartan to some, the rooms are very nice, have air conditioning as well as linens. Details on reservations and costs will be forthcoming very soon.
Last year we started a web site:
www.siouxempirefootballofficials.com. It seems a number of officials are already checking this site for constructive information on officiating and this clinic. The registration form, more information on housing and the final agenda as well as many of the handouts for the two day clinic will also be on the web site later this year.
Don’t hesitate! Get your registration in early. We are also taking suggestions for different topics, so if you have an officiating interest you would like to have explored, please forward your ideas along.
