QB A 12 roles out and advances beyond the neutral zone, he then retreats back behind the NZ and throws a down field pass. Legal ???

The fact the QB advances beyond the LOS retreats and is still live to throw a legal pass.

I suppose if we think about it, it is a little unusual in that the LOS is the proverbial "point of no return" for passing.  That is, once you're past, you cannot legally have a forward pass, yet you can retreat, once beyond, & pass legally.

Perhaps the other way is odd: you have to throw a pass from behind the line (and NFHS, NCAA, and NFL each has a different definition of "behind the line").

Who cares where you've been prior to the moment when the pass is released?

The NCAA and the NFL care.  ;)

The NCAA & NFL guys have more eyes a' watching. Our wings are off downfield with the wideouts, I'm never for making us look for more things, especially when those things don't really impact anything. :)
