Div-I v Div-II
« on: September 06, 2013, 10:46:53 AM »
Sorry fellas, not a Texan.  Help me understand.
Talking FB with a Texan that cannot explain this to me:
5A football.
We have Allen HS that won 5ADiv1 & Katy wins 5A, Div2.
What is the difference?

Enrollment figures utilized for determining division I and division II status for 3A-5A can be found on the UIL website at
http://www.uiltexas.org/football/alignments.

Its a little more complicated.  Basically, they take the top 4 teams in a District at the end of the year and send them to the playoffs.  Regardless of finish, the two teams with the highest enrollment go into the Div 1 playoffs, and the third and fourth highest enrollment teams go into the Division 2 playoff bracket.

More teams in the playoffs, and more champions.  (And more playoff games for us).

Southlake Carroll won the 5A Div 2 championship in 2005 then won the Div. 1 championship in 2006. Districts did change in between seasons, but 5 of their district opponents were the same each year. What's interesting is that the 2 teams that left the district after 2005 were smaller than SLC, as I think they both went to 4A. Yet the next year, Carroll was one of the 2 larger schools that made the playoffs.

It's an attempt to obfuscate so it's no wonder you are confused.   Done by a few guys in suits with nothing else to do or afraid of initiating real change.  Those interested in real reform would stop the recruiting.  If unable to accomplish this and eliminate the furnished apartments made available to the dad's of football stars, at least set up a division where just those schools are in the same division.  Why allow Aledo ("open enrollment") play San Antonio Brennan (non open enrollment school) in the state finals?

Aledo played Brenham, a city southeast of College Station. Both Aledo and Brenham only have one HS, so if you live in their ISD boundary, you go to that school.

San Antonio Brennan played Denton Ryan. Brennan is in Northside ISD, but most of the schools in that ISD are referred to as "San Antonio ()." There are 15 schools in that ISD, and 3 in Denton. Denton doesn't have open enrollment, but I'm not sure what policy Northside has.

And I remember a day when there was just 3 [not that long ago in my mind].  I graduated John Marshall shortly after they split enrollment offering Tom Clark.

I don't recall what list I was counting from but there are several Academies and I mistakenly counted one with the HSs. They are all listed as "high schools" on the ISD website, but I guess that only the ones you mentioned play football.

Dallas we may have been at Marshall at the same time then.    I remember when there was just one school, Marshall.  My father coached there from 1962 to 1975.

Several are magnet schools with sports programs that combine with the school where they are located.

Ignore Mike.  He's jealous since he's actually a Yankee.   I was in off season for Clark and was headed there the first year they opened and would have started as a sophomore but wound up going to Bandera my last three years since my dad became the principal there at the time.  He later became the superintendent and retired from there. We may have played football on the same team our freshman year.  We had two really good teams.

So that's the reason Doc looks like he chased parked cars.  hEaDbAnG

Tell me what flavor you like and I'll have the fridge in the garage stocked. It'd be worth it to have y'all over.
