"A" position

An official in the BYU v Texas game has an "A" on the back of his uniform.  What does this mean?

Big XII crews are using 8 officials in some games.  The 8th officials wears that letter.  It stands for "Another guy"      LOL

Stands for "Alternate referee".   But it should be a BB since he is mainly going to be a ball boy.  I don't see it in the TCU-SLU game I am watching now but I had heard the 8th guy would actually carry a ball with him during play.  Looks like they may have realized that is not such a great idea

Really? That's all the use they could find for an 8th official? To carry a ball so it can be spotted faster? Nothing else to look at during play

I suspect he has offensive line responsibilities also.  He would be another set of eyes on plays like kickoffs and punts where players are spread all over the place.

He has the tackle on the L side freeing the L to drift downfield on pass plays. U only handles the ball to relay and mark off penalties, otherwise the A spots all balls. Allows uptempo offenses to maintain a frenetic pace. The A works his Arse off. Saw the A in the UT/BYU game get stepped on getting off the ball.

Not to steal the thread but I wonder how long it wil be before there is a rule change that limits some of that chaos?   The rules committee used to try keep a balance between O and D.  Appears that balance has tilted a good deal.

I watched the U in the Oregon game a lot and he rarely ever gets set in time to focus on G-C-G pre-snap.  You can forget him counting the offense...but they don't sub either so if you start with 11, they are all still there the next play!  An "A" would be very helpful in that situation.

A good pregame understanding between the U and R will result in the R counting the Offense solo during a rapid pace offense, no problems.

Subbing in hurry-up is also counter-intuitive, as the officials will prevent the snap until team B has had time to match up.
