Georgia Tech-UNC fumble
« on: September 21, 2013, 01:48:48 PM »
About 13:30 in the 4th.  Crew rules a fumble by GT recovered by UNC.  Well worth getting on video if anyone can do that.

Replays show that a defender got his hand in and knocked the ball loose.  The runner was falling over, and as he went to ground he reached out and grabbed the ball in mid-air, before the ball had hit the ground; he then hit the ground and lost control a second time, and UNC jumped on it.

Am I mistaken, or does the GT player not have to fulfil the same criteria as a pass receiver would in this situation?  He's lost possession of the ball, and then regained control while going to ground.  There appears to be a potential hole in 2-4-3 in that it requires a catch from a pass to be held on to all the way down, and a loose ball recovery to be held onto all the way down, but it doesn't say anything about catching your own fumble.  Surely the intent is for the same principle to apply?

I saw the one where the ball came loose as the GT QB was being tackled, but he regained possession with his knee down so the fumble recovery by UNC was reversed. Is that the one you're referring to?

"A player “gains possession’’ when he secures the ball firmly by holding or controlling it while contacting the ground inbounds. The ball is then in player possession."

"To fumble the ball is to lose player possession by any act other than passing, kicking or successful handing (A.R. 2-19-2-I and A.R. 4-1-3-I). The status of the ball is a fumble."

Looks like the QB definitely fumbled.

"A live ball is a ball in play. A pass, kick or fumble that has not yet touched the ground is a live ball in flight."

"To catch a ball means that a player:
1. Secures control of a live ball in flight with his hands or arms before
the ball touches the ground, and
2. Touches the ground in bounds with any part of his body, and then
3. Maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him to perform
an act common to the game, i.e., long enough to pitch or hand the ball,
advance it, avoid or ward off an opponent, etc., and
4. Satisfies paragraphs b, c, and d below
."

Looks to me like the QB did not fulfill the requirements of catching a live ball in flight and there fore the ball was still alive when it hit the ground.
