My kids high school used to do that play until they made it illegal. Its kind of ingenious but I do understand them making it illegal. Very deceptive!

Yep.  Using a substitute or pretended substitute to deceive.

It's like news, Welpe, good news isn't news; it's the bad news (the missed calls) that we see. I would like to think that most wingmen would be alert for this and toss their  ^flag VERY high P_S.```````````

Wellllll...since you mentioned wingmen....Looks like this was a 5 man crew. At first I was thinking the team got away with it because the L was under the posts so there was no official on Team A's sideline.  But lo and behold, there he is on the LOS and don't even be moving to the posts once Team A shows FG!!!.  Is it possible (surely not) that he knew they were running the trick play so stayed there ?  ?   ?    ??

Good pick, TXMike tiphat:! Either the linesman : (1) Had gone to sleep and forgot to go to the pipes ::) ; (2) told about trick play in pregame and decided it was legal ::) ::). The field goal attempt would have been from the 47 yard  range, but I am not aware of any mechanic that place only the BJ under the pipes. ??? Let's hope it was the linesman sleeping with his eyes open & not believing that this is legal. The kicker appears to be left-footed , but this being a state championship game, should have officials that should be able to read and adjust to that. pi1eOn

Ralph, I recall in NC we used to only send the BJ back if the ball was snapped from beyond the 25 or 30 yl.  (Don't remember exactly).

I noted in one of the Michigan games I watched last weekend that the put the U back on the kick try instead of L.

Am article I've seen since I have friends up that way is that the crew approved the play prior to the game.

Coach states he ran the play by officials and got the okay.

How a state championship crew ever let this go - I have no idea.

They must not be members of Refstripes.  Only officials on here know the rules.   ;D

I blew one of these dead in my last game of the year - being watched by supervisors.
Except the player was coming from the sideline 2 steps in bounds, instead of not going all the way off.
The supervisor questioned me on it and I said I tried to get the players attention to tell him to establish in the numbers, he didn't react, and I saw no D coming over to cover him, so I blew it dead, 5 yards sub infraction.
I felt good about it. No cheap scores.

I had this in the district championship game.  I got him for a live ball Illegal Formation for not getting inside the numbers.  I was unsure whether or not the guy coming off of the sideline was doing this to intentionally deceive or not, so I got him for 5 vs 15

IP is always 15.  Did he participate? ie, run down the field to receive a pass?  Did he block?  Unless he just stands there, if the flag is dropped and the snap is allowed to go, then you must have a 15 yard penalty.

Intent is not required. If they use it, and the result is deception, it's IP.

FWIW, in a 5 man crew, our association generally leaves the B by himself back there is the ball is snapped from outside the 15.  If it's a potential game-winning kick late in the game, though, we have the discretion to send the LJ back, too.

In MI, the U is supposed to get under the uprights, opposite of BJ who is press-box side.

15 yard foul for unfair tactics all day long.  Illegal use the of substitution process.
