Aiding the runner
« on: December 22, 2013, 04:56:45 PM »
I had this situation as a white hat during a freshman game.  SWC had first and goal at the one and the RB lined up directly behind the QB.  At the snap, the QB attempts a QB sneak but is held up slightly until the RB charges him from behind and pushes him over the goal line.  Positioned as the Referee, I threw the flag and called a penalty for aiding the runner.  The SWC coach was angry and called me over for an explanation. I informed him as to what I saw and the basis for my call while also telling him it is within the rules to push the pile; you just can't grab and directly push the runner from behind.  He disagreed and said they do it all the time and other officials never call it.  He asked me to send him the rule and gave me his email. Would you advise I send him Rule 9 Section 3 Article 2 from the rule book?  Would you advise I not make this call in the future?

For an aiding the runner call, I need to see a definite grab and pull by the offensive player. I won't call it on a push of the pile.

I think that DaBigStiller got it right by rule.    I think that there are ways to "push the pile" legally, such as by executing a legal block on an opponent who is part of the pile.  However, I also believe that most officials would not flag it as per golfingref.

I disagree. NCAA changed the language in 9-3-2 this year and made pushing the runner legal. If all the RB did was push, then this is not a foul.

Legacy is correct.  Basically now they have to pick them up and carry them across the goal line.

DaBigStiller, seems like you are talking about recent games.  You mention SWC.  Who is still playing right now?

Thank you.   I will not call this anymore though I am not interested in the NCAA interpretation. I must adhere to Texas High School football rules.

Texas HS uses NCAA rules (with some exceptions), so the NCAA interpretations are usually correct.

What rule set do you use in Texas?
