No 7-Official Crews in Tx State Championships
« on: December 23, 2013, 06:04:45 PM »
A step backward -- 10 11-man Texas State Championships and not a single crew greater than five officials??  Many states have made the move to 7-official crews for playoffs -- Florida, Louisiana (!!), Virginia among many others.   When will TASO and UIL "leadership" move to the 21st century??  Wonder why basketball and baseball have timely moved to more effective officiating crew sizes... ???

You ain't from around these parts are you?

It is not up to TASO and UIL.  The coaches run the show (for now).  There were some 7 man crews uses in playoffs but the teams that made it to the final game did not mutually want them.  If they  had, they would have got them, just like they did last year.

So, if two basketball coaches demanded to use only 2 officials in the state finals, that request would be granted??

There is a UIL exception to the football playing rules that says 7 man crews are not required.

...and the National Federation basketball rules (which govern play in Texas) allow for either two or three officials, but no sane person would propose officiating competitive high-level games with less than three officials.

Maybe Texas HS officials are so good they can do the same job with 5 that takes other places 7 guys?    :sTiR:   Besides when you only get 57,000 butts in the stands for a game it is hard to pay for those extra 2 guys.

(UIL is in charge of officiating for basketball championship.  They are not {for now} in football)

Don't know about sane, but I remember several basketball coaches around the middle part of the last decade -- when 3 man crews were starting to become the norm -- that wanted 2 man crews so their team could "get away" with more things.

I think in football whats holding up 7 man for some coaches is the fear that 7 officials will call more fouls.

tiphat: Manor Road was never really receptive to the initial usage of 7-man mechanics primarily to stay in lock-step with some of the more chinchy Supe buddies of theirs. The same thing occurred back in basketball before the advent of three-man mechanics, when some college supervisors had to make the recommendation to them to change. The trade-off was that  tiphat: Manor Road summarily reduced the game fees for state tournament and regional tournaments to make up for it. Coincidentally,  tiphat: Manor Road chooses the officials for State Basketball Tournament participation, from having each Chapter submit to them a "list" of it's top 25 or a certain percentage of officials, from where the UIL selects its favored ones, and for the most part, they are, more often than not, the officers or leaders of those chapters.

Given the popularity of the new "football tournament" at JerryWorld, I fear that in the years to come, that the  tiphat: UIL will be shortly mandating the same format in that sport as in all of the others, although I personally feel that the football coaches are a different breed and might come to resent losing their power to select the crews and chapters that they have over the advent of the sport.

The coaches fought tooth and nail to keep their "freedom of choice" in choosing neutral sites for state championships, but the UIL looked at other states adoption of the central site format, and saw what an absolute "cash cow" it was going to be.

Do not be surprised that in the next 10 years that if the central site pays off even better than it is now, that the  tiphat: UIL will be mandating central site regional state-semifinal venues, much like basketball does, say over a two-day period. And granted that they won't be played in roofed stadiums, but could be played in the bigger outdoor stadium venues like the colleges and more well-to-do high schools are providing these days.

That will happen, if  tiphat: Good Ol' Uncle Charlie can come to realize that  tiphat: Manor Road can squeeze in additional revenues in which to run it's tax-free enterprise!

But they will then allow 7-man officiating crews, only after doing away with the gate structure of game fees with only a regulated amount of mileage to be paid to the game officials.

I think that it's more than fair to say that we can all see that looming on the horizon!

 tiphat:

Hell, No! Those coaches in basketball now fully know that if they reach the State or Regional Tournaments, that they will definitely see 3-man crews, no if's and's or but's! And  tiphat: Manor Road will pay those officials something like $75- per game, no matter how big or small that the crowd is!   z^

Welpe: Oh! It could have been far worse, but I chose to keep  cRaZy "the Dancing Monkey" out! It's becoming rather apparent that since the  tiphat: UIL-TASO pHiNzuP lawsuit settlement, that he has justifiably become the new   cRaZy "Mr. Irrelavant" these days!
