Bad snap on punt Colts-Pats game
« on: January 11, 2014, 08:37:20 PM »
Ok I am putting this play scenario in the section because I feel it gets the most traffic,

If some one can find the clip would be even better.

4th and 6 from I will say A45.

Ball is snapped and goes over the punters head.

Punter recovers the ball at the A3 and then tries to attempt a pass but bobbles the ball and it is batted out of the end zone by B. The real game ruling was a safety which was correct.

Now Dierdorf the idiot announcer is killing the punter who is trying to throw a 2 yard pass to the eligible  up back i believe is who it was.

To me if he does attempt to throw and the up back wisely drops the pass on purpose then the ball goes back to the original line of scrimmage as an incomplete pass and 1st down Colts.

So in actuality it was not the worse idea in the world if you ask me.

Comments? Am I correct on the situation if the pass would fall incomplete even tho some 40 yards behind the original line of scrimmage

I won't say anything about Dierdorf because my mother taught me better, but that said . . .

If the punter had gotten the pass away and it fell incomplete, the ball would be returned to the original LOS provided that it was a legal pass (i.e. not intentional grounding).  It wouldn't be any different than Brady or Luck scrambling around 10-20 yard behind the LOS and throwing an incomplete pass.

I think the punter's issue was that he was trying to make something happen on the fly and couldn't decide between taking a safety, trying to run, diving on the ball or trying to throw a pass.  Kickers are notorious for not thinking clearly in panic situations (witness Garo Yepremian).

i was surprised they did not even review the play as a possible forward pass as it was on a scoring play.

On scoring plays the booth tells the R if they want him to look at it or not, they must have seen it wasn't a pass (no intentional attempt to pass the ball) and allowed the crew's ruling to stand.  There was an injury at the end of the play, so they had plenty of time to review it in the booth.

Looked to me like he might have been thinking to pass it to #27 who was right there (thus wouldn't have been grounding if incomplete), but was hit and the ball popped loose, then muffed/batted in the air by the Colts through the EZ.
