Helmet foul?
« on: February 22, 2014, 11:49:26 AM »
B1 hits A80 above the shoulders with his forearm or helmet. Due to B1’s hit A80 lost his helmet. Does he need to leave a game for a one play?

If the helmet coming off is the direct result of a foul, no, A80 does not come out of the game.

Depends is a80 is a defenseless player or not.  If not defenseless the forearm to the helmet would not be a foul so B1 is out for a play.  If the helmet hit is not the crown of the helmet and a80 is not defenseless than b1 is out.

The key is did the helmet come off as the result of a foul.  It has to be a foul for b1 to stay in

If not defenseless the forearm to the helmet would not be a foul so B1 is out for a play.

Doesn't rule 9-1-2-a say that striking the helmet with the (extended) forearm is a foul at all times? Striking the neck area is where you have to rule on defenselessness.

"No person subject to the rules shall strike an opponent with the knee; strike an opponent’s helmet (including the face mask), neck, face or any other part of the body with an extended forearm, elbow, locked hands, palm, fist, or the heel, back or side of the open hand; or gouge an opponent (A.R. 9-1-2-I)."

It is something you have to see because "striking" is different than a vanilla hit
